Post subject:  New Nova-T: Upgrade to 2.6 kernel or wait for drivers?

Hi,

I've recently bought a Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T to get DVB broadcasts, but am running into problems. It seems the card that I've got is a new revision, using a new tuner and chipset (Thomson/Conexant) which is so new that driver support is minimal. I found this out after trying for a few hours to get the DVB card recognised using this guide but with no success - it looks like no frontend is registered, from what I can work out from the output from dmesg.

I think there's a new driver for the card that's been developed here, and it's been included in the dvb-kernel cvs tree, but only for the main 2.6 branch, and not the linux_2_4 branch.

So my question (finally!) is, should I try upgrading to the 2.6 kernel, and risk all the problems associated with that; or should I wait an unknown length of time for the drivers to be backported to 2.4 (as I think the author is, or at least was, planning on doing)? Does upgrading the kernel of a KnoppMyth box pose any particular problems? Is it easy enough for a relatively inexperienced Linux user to do?

Thanks!

If you search the forum, you'll find an excellent guide write by Nigel on how to get DVB working.
