Post subject:  Blank Screen on "Watch TV" and "Watch Recordi

Hello,
I've had Mythtv running for about 3 months and managed to get everything working OK. A few weeks ago upgraded to 0.16. and followed the walk through here
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2495&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Since then I have been unable to watch 'Live TV' or 'Watch Recording' of any of the recorded programmes.

I can watch DVDs on the Myth box and I can copy recorded programs and watch them on a networked Windows machine. So I assume the video drivers and tuner are working correctly.

Once I watch live TV, I can't seem to get back into Myth and have to re-boot the box via PuTTY.

I've looked at the logs
Code:

I've searched 'til I'm blue in the face and exhausted the patience of a Linux (but not Myth) guru I work with.

I only use the monitor output. I'm in the UK. It's a Shuttle SN41G2 with a PVR250.

If there are any pointers or help I would truly appreciate it.
regards
Mark.

well first you've got to find the problem. there were no errors in that log. look in the /var/log/messages file and the /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend file, and if neccesary the /var/log/syslog also you may not have to reboot if you can get in with putty. so next time run mythfrontend from a terminal, and if it locks up get in with putty and do killall mythfrontend which should kill the myth interface and leave you with an xterm with some erros in it.

I still don't really see any problems could you try running the frontend from an xterm and then seeing what kind of errors show up there?

I seem to be having the same problem as markm.

Could it be something to do with the nvidia drivers that we are both using?

Author:  Xsecrets [ Wed Oct 06, 2004 6:39 am ]
Post subject:

well you are not the only ones using those nvidia drivers. Are either or both of you using xvmc, because that may be causing problems since mythtv was compiled with the library from the older nvidia drivers. Otherwise I'm just not seeing the error.

I think my problem may be different. If I run killall mythfrontend from PuTTY the monitor does not revert back to the grey KnoppMyth background with an Xterm window. Instead it remains as a black screen.

At this point I ran top

No, that's not particularly insightful, sorry. What we need to see, as mentioned before, is dmesg or syslog or /var/log/messages output when you start / kill the frontend / backend.

Top doesn't even give you a full process list, `ps ax` would be more helpful, but I'd rather see a timeline with the timestamped logfiles to go along with it. It'll take you some time and some editing to pull together, but there are too many variables here and nothing obvious that's jumping out at me. Sorry.

After running killall mythfrontend there was nothing new added.

A huge post I know and I hope I haven't broken any etiquette rules in doing so.
thanks

How do I tell if I'm using xvmc?

If I run "apt-show-versions | grep myth"
The mythtv package installed is mythtv-i686-lirc 0.16-1.

I also tried changing my XF86Config-4 file back to the original one which used the "nv" driver instead of the "nvidia" driver and the problem still occurs.

Mark,
In what way do you think our problems are different?
When I try to watch a recording, the screen blanks and I can't use ESC to get back to a menu, or even ALT-F1 to get to the console.
If I kill the frontend via a Putty session the XFree86 process consumes 99% of the processor.
The only way to free it up is to reboot.

Could you try quitting the frontend, open an xterm, and run this command "mythfrontend > errors.log 2>&1". This will log any errors the frontend process generates. Then post the resulting errors.log

Here are a few interesting highlights:

Code:
Oct  6 22:39:11 mythtv insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/media/video/bttv.o: init_module: No such device
Oct  6 22:39:11 mythtv insmod: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.       You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
Oct  6 22:39:11 mythtv insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/media/video/bttv.o: insmod bttv failed
Oct  6 22:39:11 mythtv modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module rivatv

And also this:

Code:
Oct  6 22:39:22 mythtv modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-81-2

Your module settings are probably wrong. From what I've seen they can get very picky about the order they're loaded in, etc. Can you see the card in lspci or /proc/pci ? Are the modules loaded when you do an lsmod?

Also, if you have /etc/modutils/bttv (or if the module load options are set elsewhere) this might be helpful.

Good luck!

Mark,
Are you able to schedule a recording, then watch the completed recording on your Windows machine? I can't test this myself as my mythtv box is currently at work where I don't have an antenna connection.
If the recording works, then the bttv modules shouldn't matter.

I think it must be something to do with the way mythtv displays recorded tv, as it happen with both Live and prerecorded tv.

I seem to be having the same problem as markm.

When I tried running the FE from an xterm I got the following:
Quote:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
...

Could it be something to do with the nvidia drivers that we are both using?

Search for a post by me on how to fix the GLX thing. The Nvidia installer leaves an extra bogus libnvidia-tls around that you have to clean up. Once you've done that, uncomment the line in your XF86Config-4.

ok next time when you are trying to kill the frontend from putty use killall -9 mythfrontend if it doesn't die then it's pretty messed up.

the other thing that I see in there is something about the rivatv what is that all about did you try to load some different drivers or something?
