Post subject:  Moving an existing harddrive to a new machine

I have two Knoppmyth machines (one is .15, the other is .16) that are working fine. My 0.15 box has a 160gig data drive (has quite a few recordings on it) that I want to move to my 0.16 box... How do I update the database on the new machine after I install the drive to reflect the existing recordings? Thanks.

Can I just run the Knoppmyth backup on the first box and restore on the second?

No, yes, maybe... What exactly are you trying to do? Is it:

1) Add the 160 as a slave to the system with 0.16?
2) Add the 160 as the master?
3) LVM?

I know to want to keep your recordings and the only way we can advise on how to do that is if you clearly and consisely tell us what it is you're trying to do. Do you have any recording on the system with 0.16 that you want to keep?

Thanks Cesman... This is a new .16 build with no recordings that I want to keep. I am going to use this drive the same way it was used on the .15 build - as a data-only (TV recording) drive (CS on the secondary controller). The machine has another 40gig as the primary (4 partitions, etc...) drive - and where my music and digital pictures are stored.

I'd suggest:

1)Run mythbackup on 0.15 drive.
2)Make this the master in the new system.
3)Make the 40 gig slave(wipe it clean).
4)With the 160 gig in the new system as master and the 40 as slave, reinstall using auto upgrade.
5)Use LVM to create "one drive"

An LVM howto is on the forum...
