This is solved.

I first upgraded ivtv to 1.10 (as installed in /usr/src). This kind of worked, but caused the infamous frontend freeze when watching live tv, and switching to recording.

I then upgraded to 2.0 latest release candidate, and all my problems went away.

===============================================

Hi,

I've scanned the list, but haven't found anything like this.

I'm running R4V5 on a Celeron 2GHz with a PVR-250 card, and an IRBlaster controlling by Bell ExpressVu system. Video is an NVidia 4400 MX card with TV out. This sytem has been live (in use by the wife) for a week. She's still not sure if she likes it.

Anyway, what seems to happen is that the bottom 1/2 or 2/3's of the screen seem to flicker occasionally. It's almost as though a partial frame is bring dropped.

Has anybody seen this, and possibly have a solution?

Thanks,

Gerald

well I'll answer with a couple more questions

1) are you using any sort of filters? deinterlace etc
2) have you checked that DMA is on for the drive?
3) are you using xvmc?

Hi Xsecrets,

1. No filters at all (no de-interlace or others)

2. The drives are full DMA

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 8 (on)
geometry = 4998/255/63, sectors = 80293248, start = 0

/dev/hdb:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 8 (on)
geometry = 24321/255/63, sectors = 390721968, start = 0

3. Not using XvMC

Thanks for the help on this one... it's driving me nuts!

Gerald

This sounds just like the problem I'm having with my system. I have a chaintech 7nif2 board and I'm usign the build in video tv-out. But I dont think the problem is the video, but with the 250 card, because if you go into the program guide and watch the little video window you'll see the same effect -- only in the video, not the whole screen.

I've got no filters on, dma for the drives is on, and xvmc is on (at least I think it is). Furthermore I've tried the 250 card in different slots with no difference.

I dont know if its related but sometimes the front end locks up.

Needless to say, the wife says I've "ruined TV" for her because I've been hacking the TV. heheh. Too bad I can't hack beer, pizza and cigarettes.

Hmmm,

I'm beginning to wonder if this relates back to ivtv then. Could it be messing stuff up?

could very well be an ivtv issue. As far as what you posted I would turn on 32 bit IO also, that can make a big difference in drive performance too.

I think it's got to be an ivtv issue, but I can't seem to find any newer versions than the 1.9 that's been out for a long time now...

There is the source for a more recent version in /usr/src and compiling it is easy. I'm running ivtv-0.1.10-pre2-ck100z and it has eliminated that kind or artifacts for me. Search the forum or check the wiki for instructions on how to compile it.

plus the latest versions that people have been having good luck with are chris kennedy's pre2.0 versions. there are some posts on them in the forum, as well. and where you can find them.

Following the instructions in the wiki and using ivtv-0.1.10-pre2-ck100z found on the knoppmyth disk, I recompiled ivtv and it seems to have solved my flickering problem.
