Post subject:  pundit lan support

As i understand it, kernel 2.4+ has built in support for the network adapter on the pundit (not pundit-r) motherboard, correct? latest version of knoppmyth is kernel 2.4.25? should i have to do anything to get my network drivers working or should they be working out of the box?

thanks,
dan

they should work out of the box, however R4V4+ have an issue with them that causes the keyboard lights to blink. The only work around I know of is to set your IP static and remove the network cable when booting then plug it back in once the computer is booted up.

hrmm... still not working. i edited the /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolve.conf files (http://www.mattmarsh.net/computing/pundit/networking.shtml), unplugged the network cable and rebooted. as soon as i plugged the cable back in, the keyboard lights started blinking.

update... tried again using netcardconfig to set static ip. unplugged the lan cable, ran netcardconfig, plugged cable back in and got the blinking keyboard lights again. rebooted with the cable unplugged, plugged in back in once the system was up and still locks up.

Are you keeping it unplugged until it boots into the frontend? If so, do the lights start blinking the second you plug the cable back in? If so, try is 3 or 4 times and see if it blinks every single time. I have a friend that has the same problem and it blinks sometimes and doesn't other times. If that doesn't work, let me know. I have a few other ideas.

it starts blinking the second i plug it back in. i get a console message. somethin about link is up (not in front of the machine right now) and the system freezes.

actually, i am not booting into the front end. i haven't run any of the myth config stuff yet. i installed and then when x comes up, i change to a terminal. i wanted to get the network stuff and video drivers up and running before i got into any of the myth stuff.

go into the bios and turn off any acpi stuff you see.

In the bios, there is a choice between APIC or PIC. Change it to PIC. Also, try taking down the ethernet interface between plugging the network cable in.
Code:
ifdown eth0

Then plug your cable in. Then bring it back up.
Code:
ifup eth0

See if that works or not.

well, i turned off the acpi stuff. switched it from apic to pic. shutdown eth0, plugged the cable in and brought it back up and it still locks. also, which module should i be using? bcm4400 is what's on the pundit cd, then if you go to the asus website, there is the sis9000 module for download, and there's also the b44 modules included in the kernel source.

in the bios, should i have plug'n'pray os yes or no?

well, i am stumped. i tried everything i could think of/find on the net. i recompiled all my modules. i tried the b44 module instead, same thing. i tried the sis900 module after downloading the sis900.h and sis900.c off the asus webpage, and that module wouldn't even load. any more suggestions? fwiw, eth0 is showing up on IRQ 15. would that make any difference? should i just get myself an earlier version of knoppmyth? what version broke the bcm4400 module?

well, i figured i would try and older version of knoppmyth, and i'm still getting the same thing. i installed r4v3, jumped out of x on first boot and ran netcardconfig. as soon as i hit "yes" to DHCP, the keyboard lights started blinking. what the dilly?

you didn't go back far enough. R4V2 was the last one without everything ripped out of the kernel, and should work fine, or at least was reported to work fine on a pundit.

I also have a pundit and I ran the same kind of problems with onboard nic. My first thought it was a problem with PIC and APIC, so I recompile the kernel with APIC and SiSFB suport and the problem was solved. Later, searching the forum, I found a topic about this problem is by the vesafb and I think it's right. So, try to disable vesafb at boot time and if your problem is solved, modify your lilo.conf
