Post subject:  weird "expanded" character to my playbacks

Recently, myth has been playing back my recordings with what looks like the wrong spect ratio (for lack of a better description). The images appear "squashed" or "expanded" from their normal 4:3 appearance. The effect is very pronounced when the show goes to a commercial. In the commercials, I can clearly see black vertical bars on either side of the image.

I have no idea what I did to cause this to happen. I looked in setup>playback but can't see a thing that would explain this. I think it's a playback problem because I can play the nuv file on a win32 box in mplayerc, and it looks fine. Gspot also agrees:

MPEG-2
480x480
Pixel AR: 1.333
Display AR: 1.333 (4:3)

Is there something obvious anyone can think of that might be causing this?

Thanks guys and gals!

Turns out this isn't a mythtv problem at all... our ABC and NBC channels here seem to be broadcasting some shows with this image distortion! I have seen it now on 3 different TVs. Anyone else?

Shows I have seen it on are: Desperate Housewives, ER, and NYPD Blue.
