Post subject:  how can i get myth video to play divx files out of a pvr-350

Hello, I have divx files on the myth-computer but when i go to play them through mythvideo the screen blanks and returns me to the previous screen. I've tried several codecs so i don't believe that is the problem. any thoughts?

well I think you will have to change you vo settings to x11 instead of xv, but I don't think anyone has xvid/divx running smooth on pvr350 tvout, just on of the shortcommings.

I had the same problem with my PVR-350 setup at first.
Modify the mplayer command in MythTV setup>media>player (I believe) and change the mplayer command line from "/usr/local/bin/mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo xv %s" to "/usr/local/bin/mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo x11 %s"

This helped but I still had too many issues with mplayer so I switched to using xine. If you go with xine I used "xine -pfhq" for the command line for the video player and "xine -pfhq --auto-scan dvd" for the DVD player.

Did you install xine (it isn't part of the vanilla distro) or just change the command in configuration?

I use /usr/local/bin/mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo x11 %s
I can see the movie (sound and video) but. The sound is not synchronized with the video. Do I have to set something else ?

try this:
mplayer -framedrop -fs -zoom -vo x11
or something like that - the key is framedrop, it will drop video frames to keep tohe video and audio in sync.

in gneeral, open up a terminal and do mplayer --help - it shows you all the nifty little switches that mplayer has to offer, of which there are many.

BTW, just for the record, I watch divx movies on the PVR-350 out all the time and it works great. occasionally I'll find a movie that's a little choppy, but generally speaking it's more then watchable. And I even stream the DIVX movies directly from my xp box with samba. I'm at work now, so I can't say for sure, but I think I'm using ivtv 0.3.6.d and it's quite good. also, I upgrade mplayer to the latest version, that often resolves any codec problems.

You resolved my problem. Thanks a lot :D
what do you use to watch your video on windows xp ?

I use mplayerc.exe (Media player classic) with MythTV filter. My movie always skip. I use linksys Wirless-G to watch my video. (my pc is connected by cable to my router).

I just DL the free codec from divx.com then run realplayer or VLC. That presents no problems.

ok, this would be the part where you tell us specifics about your set-up, what you have tried already, etc etc. I think you'll find that people on this forum will give you a hard time for posting messages like this, because on this forum (as with pretty much any support forum) people expect you to do your homework first before asking for help. Everybodies time is valuable, and we expect you to spend YOUR time first reasearching before asking someone else for a personal help session. I realize you are new to the forum, so I thought I'd give you the lecture before you get flamed.

With that said, if you're having the problem I think you are, then you're problem is very basic in nature and has already been covered extensively. Search the forum, and look for information on using the PVR-350 for TV AND video playback.
