Okay, I have been searching online and found several options for HDTV recording. I see the linux pcHDTV cards, the windows myHD and ATI HD Wonder, etc. None of them seem to be what I need though.

All of these cards are meant to record OTA (over the air) HDTV signals. My HD programming comes in over cable. Are there any options for getting HD broadcasts from digital cable, say a capture card with Component or DVI/HDMI Inputs?

I currently have a SA Explorer 8000HD DVR, and on paper it looks great, it works decently for recording HD, but it does have alot of bugs, and alot of the features do not work due to delayed firmware updates from SA and/or TWC :(. The only video output is component, the DVI doesnt work yet, and Composite/S-Video and RF output doesnt work, so there is NO way to hook it up to a VCR or DVD recorder :(.

So, if anyone knows of a good capture device that will work with HD cable, it would be a big help to me. I would love to replace the 8000HD with my own HD capable PVR. Thanks!

Actually, I just found out that the myHD card has a Daughter Card available with a DVI input. Now the only problem with this is I dont know if that card works with MythTV or any other PVR programs for that matter (I know it will NOT work with BeyondTV or SageTV for windows, as they dont support HD yet).

Trust me -- it does NOT record an HDTV signal from a DVI port. The DVI interface is streaming UNcompressed video. You would have to compress it back to mpeg in REAL TIME to record it. No consumer-grade card in the world can do this.

So then it seems my only option is to get get one of the OTA HDTV cards and put a good antenna up on my roof I guess. I could catch the local HD channels that way, and still get cable channels from a standard digital cable box. Can anyone tell me if MythTV can work with USB IR commanders to control a scientific atlanta cable box? Like this one from snapstream...

There was a similar 'Ask /.' recently about hdtv pc capture solutions. If you go down a ways, you come to some good posts about why hdtv capture is hard to find right now. It sounds like your best bet is if you have the right kind of cable or satelite box and ieee-1394. Firewire has also been discussed a bit on mythtv users.
