Haven't seen much on this:

whenever the menu contraining time and channel info is displayed, as soon as it begins to fade out, linux frontend crashes and I have to restart the frontend using crl alt backspace.

Are you using XvMC for playback? If so, that's a well known bug.

How can I check what i'm using for playback?

Do I have any other options?

if you installed with xvmc support then you are most likely using xvmc for playback. to check go to setup playback and on one of the screens the one with usepvr350 there is a checkbox for use xvmc for playback.

If you want to continue using XvMC, then you need to modify the osd.xml file in the /usr/share/mythtv/themes/<whatever OSD theme you are using> directory and change the <fadeout> value from whatever it is, to 0. It should get you through this issue. It results in the OSD blinking off, rather than fading out.
