Post subject: | KnoppMyth and Dual Boot |
Now I've downloaded R5a10 and was hoping to get started this weekend. Doing a search on dual boot, it seems as if this is not possible unless you have two hd's (which I haven't on this box - yet)???? Is there no way to preserve a boot possibility for windows on the same box as KnoppMyth is installe on and in such a way that I can avoid re-installing windows? |

when installing dual boot windows always comes first ... then linux because windows cant speak linux (in a nutshell) a second hard drive w/ knoppmyth isnt critically needed .. but it makes things much much easier ... but once you get knoppmyth up and running ...... i think you'll find it rare that you go into windows ... cept to play games or for those windows only apps that are still kickin around a manual install might give you the ability to install on one drive ... but i'm not too sure ... anyone care to clarify? |

Unless it's changed with R5 the KnoppMyth installer expects to own all of /dev/hda. This assumption goes right back to the stated intent to make it as easy as possible to set up a (dedicated) set top box type of system. With sufficient clues you can probably set up a dual boot on one disk using the manual install process and some post install effort. However there are at least two flaws with this plan. 1) MythTV can't do it's job as a PVR/DVR if the backend isn't running, and the backend can't run when you're booted into MS-Windows. 2) You're going to want that disk space for recordings. I found a _dedicated_ 80Gb drive severely cramped after less than a week. (Edit - fixed a grammatical error.) |

Some folks have gotten dual boot working some have not. We don't know why. We don't care about dual booting, so no efforts are going to be spent to ensure dual booting works (period). Dale doesn't have an Windows system. While I have access to Windows, it is for work. Sorry, niether of us is going to spend money to make sure KnoppMyth can dual boot with Windows.
