Greetings,

I've read over all the threads on R5A10 and it seems that everyone is having success (even after a little troubles). The questions I raise are: A. Is R5A10 a significant enough improvement over R4V5 that merits the risks?, B. Is it as stable as R4V5?, C. Is the auto upgrade intuitive enough to trust (i.e. nothing extra to find and untar etc., does one only have to use the post installation instructions per http://www.mysettopbox.tv/doc.html#autoinstall)?

I have always avoided alphas for a good reason (they're ALPHA after all), it just seems so deceptively simple with everyone's praises of this alpha release. It makes me want to take my working knoppmyth box and tinker with it. I think I might borrow a spare hard drive to test it out and see if I can get it to work.

Or just buy another harddrive that you can later use in an lvm setup to increase your space. That is what I have done, but havent yet had time to install (and tweak) the alpha.

I fought this same question for a while. Even took a few stabs at installing the alphas. it never took right. then I did some research. These forums are awesome, archaic at times but awesome none the less. Here is what i used to make it work.

http://www.mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3485

the instructions are relatively straight forward. I use nano instead of VI. but other than that step for step it works with R5A10.

I just found this yesterday set up my box in less than an hour. The color seems a bit more washed on my tuner card under R5A10. I think this might be the NVIDIA drivers ( which I cant remember if I installed  I have installed R4 and R5 over and over ).

I can’t report on stability, but from what I read this is a solid release (especially for an alpha)

Another point that I had to adjust was the external channel changer code needs a –v at the end.
Code:
/usr/local/bin/channel -v

It is Alpha.. Don't forget that.
That being said. Their work on this has been fantastic. The autoupgrade is safe, and worked well for me. Here is the basic steps I like to take before doing an upgrade.
Go here http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1043 and follow the instructions on Repairing broken MySQL tables.
Then from the Knoppmyth menu do a backup.
Finally, follow Cecil and Dale's instructions at: http://www.mysettopbox.tv/doc.html

With that, you should be all set. For me, moving from an R4v4/4.5 release has been met with an ivtv problem with poor picture quality. Not everyone seems to be effected by this, but my guess is those that use it who are not, don't notice it or know better. Sad.. other than that Stability has been very good for me, but I use near Tier 1 HW. I really like some of the features in .17 of Myth. Good luck.
