Friday - Find out my 40GB Maxtor drive is failing on me. Decide its time to wipe Windows and SageTV and try MythTV.

Saturday - Finished backing up 120GB to other PC. Installed Fedora. Fedora failed to boot after install...WTF? :( Pissed off now.

Sunday - Installed KnoppMyth. Spent most of the day reading up on how to get it to work, getting it to work, etc. Yeah, I'm a Linux novice, so simple things had me boggled for awhile. Had to do the entire modprobe ivtv thing.

Here are my current KnoppMyth issues

* Once the Nvidia driver is installed, it corrupts the tty terminals windows ( crtl + alt + 1 - 4 ). They're all a mess of green flashing ANSI right now.

* How do I enable Samba since it's already installed?

* About the automatic commericial skipping. This is one of the key reasons I switched from SageTV. How does it work? I tried to play back a video this morning, and commericials were still in it. However, there was an option to "remove commercials" or something like that, but it seemed like it was going to either be done later or take some time to do. Can someone explain to me this part of MythTV?

* Volume seemed to be kind of low while playback was going on. I had to crank my speakers up.

* Is KnoppMyth schedule to time-sync every so often with a time server? If so, where do I go to configure this? I had to do an ntpdate to sync my time manually last night.

To get working soon

* Make SURE the XF86Config-4 is proper before I pipe it to my TV. ( Don't want to mess up my TV )
* The remote ( Silver ) for my PVR 250.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE DISTROS

* Update FluxBox. The newer versions of FluxBox are so much more usable.
* Add FireFox to default install.
* Automate as much as possible. ( ie IVTV install, Nvidia driver install, NVidia config editing, etc. )

---

Anyhow :) I love Myth so far. The system resources used by Linux are SO much less than XP it's unreal. Now all I need to do is get good at handling myself in a Linux environment.

Congratulations on the step up! Some of your questions have already been answered, please search the forum. When watching a recorded video, press the MENU button. One of the options is for automatically skipping commercials. Commercial skipping isn't perfect. Last I looked, there is a setting that turns it on for all recorded programs. You'll have to look for it (as I'm not at my boxen at the moment).

Re: Nvidia driver and ctrl-alt-F1. I see the same thing; no idea how to fix.

Re: Samba. Searching the forum is good; same with the wiki...

Re: commercial skip. Programs first have to be flagged for commercials before you can skip. There is an option somewhere in the settings menus for automatically flagging commercials after recording is done, or you can add it to the Job Queue by right-cursoring when you've got a program selected in the Play Recordings menu.

Re: volume. Turn up all volume options (in recording profiles as well as general playback options), and check volume settings in alsamixer (via an xterm shell).

I use ntpdate as a cron job. Not sure the ntpd instructions on this page are applicable for R5Ax anymore.

Ahh that problem.. That comes from not reading ALL the directions. Well actually that used to be part of the alpha directions, but is located at the bottom of this page http://www.mysettopbox.tv/doc.html in the Tips and Hints section.

If you have your box hooked up to a TV and, when it boots, you see a message saying Press <RETURN> to see modes...... You'll need to edit your lilo.conf At the top, it should say vga=<XXX>, change it to vga=normal Don't forget to lilo -v when you are done ;)

nano /etc/lilo.conf to edit the file. Ctrl-O to save after you make the change, then Ctrl-X to exit. lilo -v when you are done. You may have to reboot, I don't remember.

Good luck. Welcome to Myth

Doggone it, I could have sworn I'd done that and it still didn't work for me. Went to check lilo.conf and there it was set to 791. Grrrr.

EDIT: on the other hand, after editing lilo.conf to "vga=normal" and running lilo -v and rebooting, I still get video garbage when trying to exit X via ctrl-alt-F1

Is there a way to have MythTV rename all media it records something relivant? SageTV names all the media to the show it was recording. Myth not only defaults to some odd .nuv format ( which I can live with. Playback on other OSes is fine, and it can be converted to other formats. ), but it also names the file some random string of numbers instead of something like TheDailyShowWithJonStewartwithGuestBobSmith.mpg
