It's great to hear that R5 is happily into Alpha. Before I decide to download the new version, is there a list of all the improvements? I have seen the wish list thread but nothing else. If I switch to R5A9, will it include Nvidia's latest video drivers. Also if use the upgrade feature, will it upgrade the driver?

I don't know that there is a complete changelog online at this point or not.

as for your other questions yes it includes the latest nvidia drivers. I think you are confused about how the upgrade works. but to answer your question directly no it will not "automatically" update the nvidia driver you will have to run the install script, but yes it will remove your old version if that is what you were asking. at any rate, I think you need to read a little about how autoupgrade works in knoppmyth.

I have another quick question about Knoppmyth R5 that I don't think has been asked (if it has sorry in advance): Will it be fixed to support the NIC card in the Asus Pundit system? Since R3 it's been "broken" where it hangs on bootup as soon as it goes to activate the NIC so I was wondering if this would be fixed in R5.

Obviously noone told my Pundit that - it's been running R4V5 for a number of months with no network problems... (it's an old Pundit, not the newer version if that helps).

However, I'm eagerly awaiting R5 with .17 since the old installation threw a fit and crashed rather hard while installing updates two days ago and trashed the filesystem on /. Fsck recovered the filesystem but a large chunk of X libraries and the dpkg database were irretrievably damaged so a reinstall is in order and there seems little point in putting the old version on..
Once it's out I will give it a go and can let you know whether the network works...

I want to add another hard drive to my current Myth box. Does the install for R5 make it easier to add a second hard drive? Or is it better to add the hard drive under R4V5?

Like the original poster I was looking for reasons to upgrade to R5. I know lvm is included in R4, but I have not read the wish list in a while. I thought there was a request for better intergration of that functionality. I thought it would be out of place to open another thread to answer what seems to be a common question. What's in R5 that would make some one upgrade? Sorry if I have made an error in judgement.

SJWK: The NIC card "works" it just hangs the PC on boot up and causes a kernel panic (I assume since the keyboard and caps lock lights flash). If you have the network cable unplugged during bootup then plug it back in after bootup you won't have a problem.

I think I am going to have to try setting the NIC to a Static IP, maybe it's the DHCP broadcast that hoses it during startup.

dmcman73: I don't know if anyone has tested on a pundit system, but I have not heard of any of those types of problems, and I am fairly confident in that particular bug being squashed.

I started an 'experiences' thread a little while ago to detail the successes and niggles that I came across. I can report that with my Pundit anyway, the network worked fine with no problems (although it worked fine with R4 and previously Gentoo and XP too). I do have the first generation of Pundit that has Broadcom4400 NIC, rather than the Pundit-R which I believe has a version of 3com 3c595/3c905 that may need some driver modification. I'm using static address rather than DHCP mainly because it messes up my port forwarding rules on my router if it starts shifting address, but I can't see that making any difference.

well there were some changes in the kernel from R4V2 to R4V3 that started this problem with the pundits, and I'm not sure why the one person in this thread doesn't have the problem, because I personally have helped setup two pundit systems, and they both had this problem. (well one actually didn't when I first set it up R4V2, but after the HD died and I helped set it up with the latest R4V5 it did) but as I said I am pretty confident that problem should be fixed with the new kernel.

I've upgraded my Pundit to R5A10 and can verify that this problem has gone away. I no longer have to unplug my network cable to boot.
