Thanks in advance for your help....

I have a wonderfuly stable R4V5 box

Chaintech SUMMIT 7NIL1 MB NFORCE2
PVR-250
AMD SEMPRON 2400
CASE ATHENATECH A100SC MicroATX
ROSEWILL 256MB PC2700 DDR
Nvidia Geforce mx 4000 64MB AGP
WD 120 GB IDE HD
TDK 880N DVD/RW

and am intrigued by the newest version... but I would like to know if it is best to wait, or should I go and attempt an ugrade? I'd hate to lose any recordings in the process of upgrading... I'd like to back them up, but I don't have the space.

Has anyone sucessfully done the upgrade, or is it smarter to just do a clean fresh install?

Thanks so much!

I have done the upgrade several times, and the clean install only a few, but from what I've seen the clean install is giving more people problems than the upgrade. If you are going to do the upgrade just make sure you run mythbackup first. That will save the DB onto the /myth partition, and the upgrade doesn't touch the /myth partition, so there shouldn't be any way you loose shows, though if something doesn't work worst case you autoupgrade back to R4V5.

I did the upgrade from R4V5 to R5A12 without losing any of appromoxately 100 existing recordings (~220Gb worth). The issues I ran into were mostly known.

    - lircd setup needed some manual intervention
    - changes to syntax of /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv
    - networking issues caused by the eth over firewire stuff
    - you need to change your /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom links
    - clock drift with specific Nforce2 chipsets - I think yours is exempt
    - Nvidia overscan is now controlled using the nvidia-settings utility
    - if you care about animated weather maps you need to tweak the DB
    - if you're a mythburn user you may need to upgrade to CVS and fiddle with some other stuff.
    - the font alignment in the blue theme is roached. I ended up using "Iulius".
    - ...

There may have been other stuff but thats everything from my notes...

Oh and this fix for mishandled quoting issues in the web interface...
Code:
root@black:/var/log/mythtv# diff /etc/php4/apache/php.ini~ /etc/php4/apache/php.ini
382c382
< magic_quotes_gpc = On
---
> magic_quotes_gpc = Off

I had a good (successful) time upgrading (using auto upgrade) from R4V4 to R5A10 and then R5A12 without losing any of my recordings. I wouldn't worry about it.

On a (perhaps) related note, I also had stability issues with both R5A10 and R5A12, and was able to easily downgrade (again using auto upgrade) to R4V5 once again. The system's now been up 20 days, with no problems whatsoever since the downgrade.

Once the painful burning goes away, I'll probably look at upgrading to R5 again, but I've promised myself that this time I will check my memory, my disk integrity, and the MD5 sum of my ISO before making the attempt.

The thing that I liked about R5 is the built in web browser. However, in combination with the current pvr-350 out setup, it seems to hang. So, on my actualy production system, I'm using R4v5 still until I or someone else can come up with the fix for this.
