Hi All,

I've been sniffing around the Hauppauge MediaMVP stuff for use as a front end, but I'm wondering if there might not be another way to do an ultra slim front end.

I recently played with the CD only front end on some PCs at work and it was very slick.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to do a CD only style bootable USB thumbdrive / memory key instead. I'm thinking:

AMD Mobile processor for low power and heat
Mobo with onboard TV out and all the other necessities
256MB Ram
512MB Thumbdrive for OS and config
Small footprint case, small power supply

I haven't played around on Newegg yet but I suspect we could throw something together for <$150.

Would this be viable as a front end? Can you install the frontend only to a USB drive?

-Jeff

You cannot install onto a thumb drive. You'd have to place the contents of the CD onto the device. Check the forum on knoppix.net for details. While I've had this in the back of my head for some time, I have not gotten around to it. I've purchased a multi-function mp3 player/thumb drive with this in mind. You can also boot over the network...

Would it be necessary to copy 100% of the CD contents to the USB key or are there large directories that could be skipped to help keep the size down without disabling front end support?

Thanks Cecil.

BTW - Thanks again for a fantastic distro.
