What's the future direction for knoppmyth? It seems to me X windows is superfluous and takes up RAM and CPU power that could be used for something else. Any way it could be reworked to use framebuffer? Thanks! |

What? RAM is cheap, and as far as I know, nvidia does not provide accelerated drivers for anything but X windows (e.g. not framebuffer). There is work from other developers on accellerated framebuffers, but... And, to be honest, X isn't really that big, considering. Plus, this is really a MythTV issue, not a KnoppMyth issue. -brendan |

When I was first trying to install MythTV on my own (i.e. before I found the most excellent KnoppMyth way), I thought the same thing. Set Top Box. Local display. X has heaps of networking junk in it. A Gentoo install was nice and small. Why do I need to install hundreds of megabytes of X junk? After lots of frustration with framebuffer versions of MythTV, I decided that at least the X input manager would work (unlike Qt/Embedded, which actually had to start up a window manager so that mouse and key events could be dispatched to the app). So then I tried to install Xfree under Gentoo. A day later, when it had only built a third of the dependencies, I gave up on MythTV for quite a while. But, enough of my sorded history. It has also been quite convenient to be able to run mythtv-setup -display laptop:0.0 and reconfigure KnoppMyth without grabbing the keyboard and connecting a mouse to the PC. |
