What's the future direction for knoppmyth?

It seems to me X windows is superfluous and takes up RAM and CPU
power that could be used for something else. Any way it could be
reworked to use framebuffer?

Thanks!

RAM is cheap, and as far as I know, nvidia does not provide accelerated drivers for anything but X windows (e.g. not framebuffer). There is work from other developers on accellerated framebuffers, but...

And, to be honest, X isn't really that big, considering.

Plus, this is really a MythTV issue, not a KnoppMyth issue.

The X Window System rules (PERIOD)!

When I was first trying to install MythTV on my own (i.e. before I found the most excellent KnoppMyth way), I thought the same thing. Set Top Box. Local display. X has heaps of networking junk in it.

A Gentoo install was nice and small. Why do I need to install hundreds of megabytes of X junk? After lots of frustration with framebuffer versions of MythTV, I decided that at least the X input manager would work (unlike Qt/Embedded, which actually had to start up a window manager so that mouse and key events could be dispatched to the app). So then I tried to install Xfree under Gentoo. A day later, when it had only built a third of the dependencies, I gave up on MythTV for quite a while. But, enough of my sorded history.

It has also been quite convenient to be able to run mythtv-setup -display laptop:0.0 and reconfigure KnoppMyth without grabbing the keyboard and connecting a mouse to the PC.
