Wow, I wish I'd had a bit more notice. I'd have come down to give a hand. Unfortunately, I'm tied up, but good luck and I hope everyone has a great time! burgessms wrote: Sunday, Apr 24, I'm hosting an EFF inspired Build-in

same here. more notice would be nice. But I have shiny new tires on the motorcycle, and well, they are screaming to be broken in. The desert and mountains are calling. I must not spend my Saturday with computers... must see nature... must ride fast.... must not waste this spring socal weather... ahhh.. maybe next time. I will look down upon you from the glendora ridge road, and the sprawling LA basin bellow. I will give a thought to you all working so hard to configure your myth boxes, then I will roll on the throttle and lean way into the turn, scrapping the peg as the thought evaporates into the dust behind me. Have fun, and good luck. Maybe next time. |

Barring unforseen difficulties, I shall be there. |

This may seem like an ignorant question but what is a build in. I have looked at the EFF link and it looks like a great idea, but I wonder if they support Aussies? |

But hear in Oz, we don't have the benefit of special beautiful people like yourself cesman, but I may look further into it, as LAN days don't always interest me. |

Well, we're not looking for a LAN day, only hooking up a lan to get schedules. We have some windoze experienced folks, some unix background, and some people who have never opened the case of their PC. We're going to spread the guts out on a long table, install the tuner cards and whatever else we need, and then start passing the knoppmyth CD's around. I'm finding that with my limited unix/linux background, and some "quirks" I'm running into, and a lag with email help, having a resident expert around can help get things happening. Perhaps one can debug hardware issues, one figure why the antenna cable is dead, and a 3rd to keep resetting the circuit breaker for the room. It's not a play party, more like a work party, and then there will be 6 more happy folks Sunday night, that can time shift their TV shows, and inpress their friends, begin the move from the Dark Side, and learn something along the way. (actually, the power into the room is just fine) |

(actually, the power into the room is just fine) Well, lucky for you, when it comes to knoppmyth, they don't get much more "expert" than cesman. You should be set. ![]() |

burgessms, dude I think you got the wrong idea of what I meant by a LAN day. Here a LAN day is all about gaming and not being the best gamer in the work, I am generally one of the first person that bleeds. I prefer something that taxes my brain a bit more, such as hardware issues, etc. Thanks for the explanation though. |

We had a hardware issue that would have taxed your brain... We got it solved and everyone was able to watch HDTV! ![]() |

D'oh!! Um...while nobody was looking, we took a vote and decided that another build-in should be held really soon now, in the Los Angeles area. Maybe somewhere near Torrance. Yeah, that's it...near Torrance. I can install hardware and have been known to get a server or workstation running, by my Knoppmyth box has this uncanny ability to completely flummox me. Ah well, in lieu of a build-in really soon now, I'm going to pound the forums for a bit more and see how far I get. Might even ask a question if I work up the nerve. |

What was the secret you typed into my system, to get the ethernet working ? I've updated to the R5A15.1 and now have lost ground and have nothing. (we tried the built-in IBM ethernet, and an add-in card, neither worked in knoppmyth till you typed something in I didn't catch.) Mike |

Edit /etc/lilo.conf, change the append line to acpi=no. Please start another thread for any issue you may have. |
