Checking /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log I see this:



ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 1: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 2: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 3: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 1: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 2: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 3: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 1: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 2: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 3: No space left on device
ERROR: file I/O problem in safe_write(), errcnt = 1: No space left on device

It goes on forever. It seems the cache is full and stays full. I can delete the cache and it will stay up and working for some time.
Any ideas?

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 3.8G 1.6G 2.0G 46% /
/dev/hda3 13G 236M 12G 2% /cache
/dev/vg/myth 356G 31G 326G 9% /myth

But it is empty now because I deleted the files in it.

It might be worth booting up in singleuser mode and running fsck on the /cache volume.

As you watch live TV, /cache will grow. If the backend too a dump while watching TV, changes are you need to clean out /cache/cache...

Ok.. I guess that is what has happened. Overnight the backend will crash which doesn't clear the cache and the only way to reclame the cache is to remove it..

probably need to reformat the drive. by default the myth drive gets formated with few inodes expecting not too may large files. if you fill it with lots of small files you run out of inodes even though you have space left. there is a thread about this.

that shouldn't have anything to do with cache. If you are putting any files at all other than the ringbuffer in /cache then you are just asking for trouble, so the limited inodes will not affect it.

Sounded like the problem was the old Unix FAQ, why didn't deleting the file free it's space? For the curious who don't already know this - Because so long as something has it open the inode (which actually controls the space) stays around.

I'm having a similar problem, and so far my solution has been to just delete the 1gig+ log files this is generating. Help?

Have you read the logs? There are filling up for a reason...
