Is there any way that the installation process could be made easier for hardware, the DVB and Video card drivers in particular?

I have been battling with the Nova-T PCI (90002 version) and as a complete starter with Linux kernel stuff I have no idea how to begin modifying it updating or loading the extra modules, let alone downloading them in the first place via CVS.

It would be great if there was an option on the CD when you start where you could enter what hardware you had and knopmyth would download the appropriate drivers compile them into the kernel (or whatever?) and then install itself.

That would make the whole easy set top box idea even easier for beginners and people that don't really want to get that involved with the intricate workings of Linux and would rather not line the pockets of Microsoft!!

I am very impressed with this project, it is a great idea and its clear that a lot of hard work has gone into it by some very dedicated people.

Thanks

Nigel

From what I have read elsewhere on this website what you are asking is in similar vain to what the KnoppMyth reference Hardware is all about.

So people like yourself that aren't that conversent with Linux can go purchase a machine following the guidelines set out and then install the software knowing that it will work.

No it wouldn't. Do you know the level of complexity this would involve? First off, the hardware that we have is very limited. Trying to build a special kernel for each the myraid of possible hardware combination is a huge task. Trying to present this in a way the average user would understand is simply up impossible. Some users don't even know if thier Pentium IV is a i586 or i686.

Sorry cesman for my misunderstanding, I thought apart from the commercial benefits for mythic, that Joe Blow off the street could buythe same hardware, or hardware that has the same chipset and (in theory) should then be able just install KnoppMyth and have it work.

If I have misunderstood this, I do apologise and you can email me to correct my misapprehension.

Thanks.

Yes I see what you are saying, that is why I suggested getting Hardware that works with the system instead of changing the system to work with the hardware. Obviously the latter is much, much easier and more beneficial to the public as a whole.

Skeels if you refer to the document on the KnoppMyth Reference system, it explains a bit more why cesman does not code to every piece of hardware.

Well, it was just an idea, I didn't realise it would be such a massive task.

I guess that the future releases will have better support as more cards become supported in the more up to date kernel.

What version will be in the next release of Knoppmyth?

The answer to that is always "when it is done".
