While I'm in the process of re-installing KnoppMyth again I ran into a link that indicated that some other Linux FS could give better performance then ext2/3.

For example ReiserFS is faster in partitions with mostly small files and the XFS handles large files much better (faster) then ext3.

any real benefit with doing a manual install and setting up with these FS?

you don't have to do a manual install to get them. all you really need to convert are /myth and /cache. you can copy your files back and forth while creating them. I did this and converted mine to XFS a long time ago, and the autoupgrade doesn't touch those partitions so all has been well every since. If you search for XFS there is some anecdotal evidence that it can improve the channel changing speed, and from personal experiance I can tell you it deletes the files much quicker after you are done watching them, but I don't think there is any hard evidence.

no reason, just hasn't been any definative reason to make it the default. the default install is a modified ext to use larger block sizes to better deal with large files, at least it used to be, but that may have gotten left behind, cause we had people having problems when they tried to load 500,000 roms on that partition.

I converted my /myth partition to XFS (along with moving to a RAID 5 array at the same time). I would agree that channel changing and deletion speed have improved. Everything seems ok (knock wood) so far.

well I've been running XFS on my /cache and /myth partitions for over a year now, and not a single problem with the filesystem.

These may seem like silly questions, but what program do you format them with and what is the type number is XFS?

the type number has to do with creating partitions not file systems. they may seem similar, but are actually two very different things. So sort answer you don't have to worry about type numbers you just keep what you have. As for the commands to format a partition XFS I can't remember, but if you search there is a thread which basically spells it all out for you here on the forums somewhere.

It will be quite old, it's the one I used.
