I updated to the latest cvs as it provided several features and fixes I wanted.

Naturally I had to edit the backend startup script to change the location of mythback from /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin - however despite that change the script is failing to start mythbackend. I can start the backend manually but that is far from ideal.

The backend log shows the following when the script run at boot time:

Code:
2005-05-08 23:33:26.053 Unable to read configuration file mysql.txt
2005-05-08 23:33:26.122 Trying to create a basic mysql.txt file
2005-05-08 23:33:26.126 Could not create //.mythtv
2005-05-08 23:33:26.129 Failed to init MythContext, exiting.

The problem is obvious however the cause and solution are eluding me. I would greatly appreciate any help!

when you compile the cvs you should set --prefix=/usr so you wont have to make any changes

cheers

Well I re-made it with the correct prefix - reverted the changes I made the to startup script and I still have the same error. Mythbackend runs fine if started manually but gives the above errors if started by the script DURING startup.

Take a look at the source tree that Cecil provides with KnoppMyth which has a set of "Debian patches" to make things work better with KnoppMyth's Debian style directory layout. You might be able to apply these same patches (with maybe 90% success) or failing that make changes that match the intent.
