Post subject:  Problem with hostname after R4 to R5 upgrade

I've done my upgrade from R4V9 to R5A16 and most things are working very well -- nice job on the release! I have 1 problem and I have 1 question:

1. Problem: My hostname "mythtv" is no longer recognized on my network. I can "putty" and "browse" to the box using it's IP address, but I can't use it's hostname anymore. Also, I've noticed that my windows machines no longer show it in "my network places/entire network". Any thoughts on how to fix this?

2. With R4 I followed the instructions in the wiki to sync my clock with a public NTP server. (TimeSynchronizeHowTo). Is this still necessary, or does R5 activate this service automatically on install?

Thanks!

Marc

OK, forget the problem listed in # 1. I just tried it again and it worked. The only explanation I can come up with is that I did another reboot -- perhaps that clear it up, or perhaps it was simply a propigation delay. In any event, my apologies if anyone spent any time looking at this.

Would still appreciate any feedback people might have on item # 2 (question on NTP server sync.)

Thanks!

Marc

Did you have Samba or something like that runing before? One of the services is to advertise your machines identity to others in the network. At a guess if you set it up properly and kick them (reboot or restart networking on the MS-Windows boxes) the other machines will see it again.

Yes, if you want to sync with an external time source you'll need to set that up manually. If you have an Nforce2 chipset double check if you're vulnerable to the "too many interupts make the clock run fast" (as in gaining several minutes a day!), I've posted about this at least a couple times so a search should turn it up pretty quickly.

TJC, thanks for the feedback. I set up ntp to keep the clock sync. On the hostname problem -- I suspect that after doing the update-rc for Samba, I didn't reboot or start it manually. On a subsequent reboot, everything started working properly...
