When i boot up KnoppMyth (hasn't even booted up completely before, since install), all the system checks are listed, then, as it is supposed to launch the windows manager, it says it can't, due to a problem with X-windows (or something like that). I am using an Nvidia Geforce4 MX420 (I had to use a different as as my ATI 3d rage wasn't working with it), and i really want to get KnoppMyth working. Do i need to provide any more information? If so, what? Thanks in advance. |

The questions that come to mind are: 1) did you install the nvidia drivers? 2) are you trying to use TV-out? 3) if so, have you investigated the changes you have to make to your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file? 4) if not, what kind of monitor do you have attached to it? |

for your answers: 1)Nope, how would I go about doing that? 2)No, not yet. 3)N/A 4)I'm using a sony Vaio monitor, 17" I don't have a compatible capture card yet, i was going to use my 3d rage AIW, but apparently AIW doesn't work with MythTV. I am planning to go wtih AverMedia AverTV, or if i'm willing to spend the money a PVR-150/250....What do you think? |

Read the "pamphlet" instructions beginning at "post installation." Find the part that begins "If you have an nVidia based video card, now is the point at which we recommend installing the drivers." Then follow the instructions just after that sentence to install the drivers and restart GDM. You have two choices of drivers, a 6000-level set and a 7000-level set... the older ones are for a problem with running to a 1080i HDTV set. If that doesn't do it, then it's an actual Linux problem and someone way more comfortable with it will have to help you. Your monitor might require a custom modeline for the XF86Config-4 file, for instance. |

Thanks, but when i type "install-nv" while logged in as root (keep in mind that the whole time i'm in a DOS-like bash) it says that the command is not found. Is there a different way to do it in bash? |

nope, you type "install-nv" and then press the TAB key a couple of times--it will show you your two options. Pick the one you want and then type that command and press Enter, or use the TAB auto-complete feature again and type out "install-nvidia-7" and press TAB (or -6 and press TAB). Just to be explicit, the two options are install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh and install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh |

When i press TAB, it makes a loud noise, so i'm thinking it doesn't do anything...i'll go try it again. |

You need to follow the rest of the directions and fix your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. See the directions that ceenvee703 point you to or these: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=KnoppMythInstall Please read the directions through to get feel for the process then follow the directions completely. If it says "type "install-nv" and hit tab twice" it means "type those characters and hit tab twice" not hit enter. Cecil was showing you "tab completion" of the name as a way to make the directions less vulnerable to changes in the version. |

I understand....So all i need to do is edit the XF86Config-4 file? How do i edit it through bash? |

The R5 alpha version of KnoppMyth has nano included, so you don't have to apt-get install it anymore. Be sure and switch to root ("su") before editing ("nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4") or you won't be able to save your changes. |

Yes, vi is the One True editor. All others are pretentious pretenders, and if you do not agree, you are prevaricating. (Actually I learned vi during my first painful exposure to UNIX and I cursed it every day for weeks. Now I can't seem to use anything else. Is there hope for me Dr. Xsecrets?) |
