Post subject:  No Sound in Linux or Myth R5A16

Been trying to figure this one out for a bit; not getting any sound in Linux or Myth under R5A16.

I'm trying to use the built in sound on my mobo. Its listed in lspci as:

VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller

I ran 'alsaconf' and everything seemed happy.

I think the modules are loading:

#lsmod | grep snd

snd_seq_oss 31488 0
snd_seq_midi_event 8064 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 49680 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_pcm_oss 48032 0
snd_mixer_oss 18048 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_via82xx 23616 0
snd_ac97_codec 68984 1 snd_via82xx
snd_pcm 79364 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 22532 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 9348 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm
gameport 5632 1 snd_via82xx
snd_mpu401_uart 7936 1 snd_via82xx
snd_rawmidi 21536 1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device 8716 3 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi
snd 47460 11 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device
soundcore 9312 1 snd

I changed the permissions just to be sure, but still no audio. I added mythtv and root to the 'audio' group, too.

I checked the sound mixer and the output levels seem to be at 100%. The only thing I found was that I couldn't adjust the volumes in the mixer.
The seem be stuck at 100% but I still can't hear anything.

What else can I try?

Thanks,

Jon

Something must be f'd up with the via sound drivers in R5A16.

I installed KnoppMyth R5A12 and the sound works, but now I can't get my tuner to work. Ack!

This is turning into a nightmare.

Well, you're half right about the drivers being f'd up. Apologies if you're already aware, but alsa sound is initially muted by default, so make sure Master and PCM show green "00"s in alsamixer, rather than black "MM"s for "muted". Next is to make sure "IEC958 Capture Monitor" is off (muted). My experience is that this is crucial. One of the "via dxs" sliders should control your volume.
I have a previous post that might be helpful:

HTH. Wouldn't know how to proceed if it doesn't.

Very good. Thanks for the tip about the IEC958 Capture Monitor!

It looks like we are using the same mobo (Biostar M7VIG 400), so that's probably it. <sigh>

Will probably try R5A16 again see if that helps since I still not getting the tuner working in R5A12.

OK, I just reinstalled R5A16 and muted out the IEC958 Capture Monitor and now sound in Linux is working. Yay!

However, having lots of tuner problems with this Diamond PVR-550.

The ivtv driver is recognizing the card, but the tuner is not displaying video.

Will try some more tomorrow.

More progress today.

I now have sound and tuned channels working in Myth, although it is extremely choppy and not really useful yet.

Turns out I neglected to put the necessary audio ROM file in /lib/modules.

The Diamond PVR-550 CD has a file call 'makoaud.rom'. I copied this over to /lib/modules and renamed it to 'HcwMakoA.ROM' and audio started working in Myth right away (although choppy).

Will start another thread about the choppiness I think...
