Post subject:  playing files currently being recorded

I want to play recordings from a smb share. It's no problem if the recording is finished, but if it's still in progress the player (tried vlc, mplayer and mplayerc) will only play up to the point where the recording was when I started it and then stop. So if it's only recorded the first 30 seconds when I open it mplayerc will only play the first 30 seconds and then stop. I've looked into mythstreamtv but it seems that it insists on compressing the video, which I don't really want. Does anyone have an idea?

Apparently you've encountered an interface limitation or config issue. At a guess the FS driver determines the file size at the time it is opened and never looks again. There maybe a way to configure around this, but it may just be a limitation of the interface spec...

tjc,

but if you play from a remote frontend, do u still face the same limitation ? Or does the myth protocol takes care of a ever growing file which is being recorded ? I dont have a working frontend, so I've not tried it.

Thanks

The frontend can play in-progress recordings no problems. Probably a samba limitation.

I really wish I could get this figured out. I suppose if I can get my mythtv fast enough to play hdtv recordings it won't really matter anymore. I can get my Barton up to about 2ghz, but that's still not enough. Think that + an xvmc card like the one in this link would be enough?

Sorry for the topic drift.

If you can get xvmc to work then that is more than enough. I've heard some success stories lately with xvmc, but I am still a bit leary.

I've had luck getting the nvidia drivers working, so there's definitely a chance.

Yes the nvidia drivers have always worked, but until very recently whenever you tried to enable xvmc you would get lockups whenever you tried to ff/rew.

Card came today and now I've almost got hdtv success. I still can't watch TV in the "live" mode but I can record it and watch it at the same time. CPU usuage on my mobile 2400+ is only 40%. I've got the baseball all star game going but there's not sound right now. I have sound on the recorded file in windows tho. I gather from what I read in a previous thread that this is an issue with mythtv not knowing what to do with itself when the broadcast doesn't have the type of audio stream flagged, or something like that. As expected, under xvmc the menus are all gray and the thing seems to jitter a bit when I do any searching.

edit: ah, it seems to happen when i seek. maybe something with commercials, too? i didn't notice that because i didn't have speakers plugged in when i first started the recording. might just be stuck with it.
