I've downloaded and installed twice. Both times, I get an error when trying to bunzip2 the kernel sources. Everything works fine, except I can not compile the nvidia module due to the fact that the kernel source is not available.

Am I the only one having this problem? I tried two different sources for ISO and the problem remains the same. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I installed version R5A15 with little trouble.

thanks for the help!

(Edit: I'm having the problem with the R5A16 version).

(Edit again: I just checked the md5sum and it is as expected).

The irony is, I just paid for LxM membership and now I can't use it. Help please. :)

well the kernel sources are tared and bziped, so if all you did was bunzip them then you haven't done everything you need to. you'll still have to untar them. but if you just want to knock it all out with one command

tar -jxvf kernelsourcename

should do it, or then again you could simply use the install-nvidia???? script to install the nvidia drivers instead of downloading it from nvidia and the script takes care of all that for you.

Thanks for the reply Xsecrets, but the truth is, it gives an error when I try to extract it. The nvidia script didn't work, because it encounters the same error when it tries to extract the kernel source.

Here is the last few lines of the output of the command:

tar -jxvf kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2.tar.bz2

Code:
...
...
...
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/stx_gp3_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/chestnut_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/SPD823TS_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/mpc8555_cds_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/katana_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/menf1_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/sycamore_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/lite5200_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/configs/ocotea_defconfig
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/lib/
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/lib/Makefile
kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/lib/locks.c

kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/arch/ppc/lib/checksum.S

bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
perhaps it is corrupted?  *Possible* reason follows.
bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

tar: Read 1480 bytes from kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2.tar.bz2
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
root@mythtv:/usr/src/test#

I've checked the md5sum and burned it twice with nero using verify mode. The previous version of knoppmyth had no such problem.

Is there a place I can download only kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2.tar.bz2 :?:

Ok, I've burned about a million CDs in my life, but for some freak reason, the third time was the charm. Maybe it was the cheap CDs? Maybe it was the new labels I've been using (handy home labeling system with tape labels). I don't know. But, for whatever reason, all is good. Damn.

The CD even verified Ok. now I'm worried about my other CDs. Maybe my CD burner is going out. Ahhhh...

Thanks for the help....

Stick on labels are supposed to be one of the worst things you can do to a CD or DVD. The experts recommend just using a Sharpie.

No, there isn't. If it doesn't untarred, I would not trust that burn. In addition, did you verify the MD5Sum?

I recently installed Fedora Core 5 on my workstation box and one of the good things about is is that it urges you to test the CD to verify that it's good. Knoppmyth makes this easy too although it's less pushy about it. Just add the testcd option to the CD boot command.
