Anyone ever had a problem with MythMusic crashing the frontend? It usually happens just after a song transition. The song will just start and boom...no MythGUI, just the KnoppMyth screen. I've just upgraded from R4V4 to R5A16...it did it in R4V4, and it's done it once so far in R5A16. I've also noticed that the upcount time for songs isn't real time. By the end of the song, it never hits the true length...it always falls about 10-20 second short. Not sure what causes that...maybe a related problem? Occasionally the upcount will just freeze, along with the whole interface and I usually have to crash the system to recover. The current song will finish though. Weirdisms. I can live with them. Just wondering if anyone else has MythMusic issues like this and if they've got any suggestions. |

it happens.. mythmusic is (and always been) the buggiest module of mythtv one small side note.. they are also totally redoing it.. so that may change fairly soon.. good stuff on the horizen! |

Hi, That was shocking news about mythmusic being buggy! That is the first thing I always try as it gives me a way of checking audio, cd access, and cpu handling of the eye candy. Sometimes I have to use the level 2 for eye candy. Only error (fixable) is the decoder gets MAD. That is just the path setting after an install. I have left it run for days and never an error! This has held true for R4V5 and up to R5A16. Please share some details ? Thanks Mike |

ever heard the expression, "Your results may vary."  I have been with myth since .12 and had many .. many mythmusic crashes.. but it greatly depends on hardware and mostly what type of music files.. all my music is in ogg.. and a few mp3's. i have ~6 mythboxs in use.. and all have at one time or another had mythmusic problems.. but i agree it does work.. and lately its been working pretty well for me.

Hi gr8nash, I hope others are enjoying my good mileage! I do some ogg and the rest is mp3, medium, variable br using lame. Only issue I have is one screen of eye candy gives me a black screen with a "?" in the middle. Using random, it is replaced with something else on the next tune. What sort of problems / how does it show up? Just in case, I'll be prepared 
So far I've done this with at least a 1/2 dozen machines and use the the music / cd rip / play to test the audio. It is one the first steps I do on an install with the R5A16. If there isn't music one can usually rest assured there are other issues also. I would suspect planman still has some other things to tweak and check out. Any one else have any feedback? Most of my music is in Ogg format (VBR, medium)...majority was encoded external of the Myth. I have some MP3's as well...varying bitrates. It crashes on either format. I am using the s/pdif out (this time around...when I was on R4V4 I used analog...still crashed). My hardware is: DFI Infinity NForce2 (using onboard sound) AMD Athlon XP 2500+ AOPEN GEForce MX440 64MB 512 MB RAM (2x 256MB running in dual channel) I've been playing music today for the last couple hours with no issues. I scaled the size of my playlist down and it hasn't crashed since then. So maybe playlist size factors in? I'm using Smart Shuffle mode. BTW, mjl, that visualization with the "?" in the center of the screen...that's Album Art...you just don't have the Album Art (CD Sleeve Image) for that album in your Myth. Hi planman, Hey thanks for the tip on the "?" I figured it had to do with pictures but never thought of cover art. Will have to give it a go! The play list is about the only thing different, I just go through and select a bunch of tunes (some times everything) and turn it loose. smart or random usually, repeat mostly, however one pass sometimes with a selected cd. Never tried a play list, but will now (next week actually). I do have a few cuts that ripped with flaws (~5 or 10 out of a few hundred tunes) and those play with distortion. I find the R5A16 is really stable. Mike |

Hi gr8nash, The only time I have seen segfaults are with my via chipset. That happens occasionally on a playback of previous tv recording. Music has been fine. Mike |

hey mjl, I don't actually use playlists (as in saving a list)...I do it just like you...setting up a bunch of songs in my active play queue (and yes, sometimes I just do all of 'em too!). I have some songs that ripped with hot levels as well...I think this comes from the way the CDs are produced. Music these days (popular music anyways) is usually highly compressed (in dynamic range) and they produce the CDs with the loudest/highest levels they can. When we go rip the music then, it comes off with the levels peaking or above and the distortion comes through with the mp3/ogg compression. It's tricky to rip it without the distortion happening...sometimes you need to set normalize down to like 70 or 80%, and depending on your ripping software there are some other options available. I never had mine crash when playing music yet. But I have had it hang when I import new music. I store my music on a remote samba share (on my desktop, and my desktop is on before my htpc) I have about 20 albums in it. Sometimes if I delete an album on the desktop and rescan on the htpc it will hang at 0% updating database. Sometimes it recovers in about 5-10 minutes, sometimes it just doesn't recover. (no samba errors on console). Othertimes it will rescan fine... |

damn, now that I said mine was playing back fine, it screwed up... It seems to be stopping playback about 12 seconds from the end of the song. It hasn't crashed, it just stops. If I hit next it goes to the next song. ?! |

Hi bouche, Doesn't sound to me like this is quite fair, I think when you do fancy stuff and sharing across the network that you really can't put all the blame on KnoppMyth  It may be getting confused trying to find who's on first, (or is it who's on second and what's on first?) anyway, I have been using everything on a one box system with no troubles. R5A16
The music files take up so little space ( compared to tv recordings) that I would suggest doing the process in reverse. Put your recordings on the myth box and map to that directory. I know it works well for the "/myth/pretty" using win xp and win2k so should do good for the music too. That's about what I have also maybe 20 ~ 30 cds, of course some won't get played till Xmass time.... I have dropped music files into the myth/music/ making directories and then did a rescan to pick them up. I don't recall details on how much information it was able to gather, but the tunes were there and worked. This is one of the nice features of KnoppMyth, it doesn't cost anything to start fresh, and no preapproval required! Mike |
