Post subject:  Networking issues

Okay, I searched and searched for this problem and couldn't find another person with the same issue. I'm probably just using the wrong keywords...

I'm running R5A16
Anyway, this is what happens: when I start up mythtv the network works just fine. I can open mythweb in my browser, and can ssh via putty. However, at some point I cannot connect to my myth box. I can't even ping it. Does anyone know what is causing this? Restarting the mythtv box fixes the problem, but this feels real crude and I'd like to avoid it if I can.

Any suggestions welcome.
thanks.

Have you looked at the system logs?

If you are using DHCP, perhaps an expired lease?

pretty common with wireless, particularly with the orinoco drivers, but that's just a guess out of the blue since you didn't specify.

Okay, I am using DHCP (wired, not wireless)
Is there any way around this? Is there a setting in my router I can change to prevent this? Or am I going to have to hardcode an IP?

WAIT!
Doh, I was wrong. I can ping it... So it seems to not be a DHCP error, the mythtv box is keeping the same ip. However I am getting a "connection refused" both when I try to open the ip using a browser or putty. I haven't checked error logs yet because I am recording and don't want to restart the computer. I will post any logs I see once I do that, though.

okay, update:
I had created a network share for \\myth\mythtv and when I accidentally clicked on it this morning it pulled up a login window. So I provided the mythtv mythtv login and password and was able to open the folder. I thought, that this would fix my problem, but again when I typed the IP in my browser I received a connection refused message. So, I thought to try typing mythtv in the browser, and that worked! Same with putty, if I try to connect to the IP I get an error but if I connect to myth it works. Why would the IP be blocked but the alias isn't?
This essentially resolves my issues, I just need to get used to connecting to aliases instead of the IP. However, I am curious as to why this happened.

Take a look at the file /etc/hosts it handles names resolution.
