Post subject:  Structure for backup?

A thought...

I know there is the upgrade procedure, I was wondering if there might be room for a script of some kind, or a directory structure, where we can put localized changes and a script that runs in cron and tars and gzips up the local config and any customizations/scripts that have been added etc. Resulting in a single file we could pull off to another box so that in th eevent of a re-installation we could drop it back on, untar it and get everthing, including scripts we've added (as long as they are centralized) back.

Upon reflection it sounds like it might just be a small change to the upgrade procedure, or even just some more documentation on what exactly that does so people can adjust in to that strcture?

I'm not sure...

It sure would be nice to preserve custom SAMBA settings, LIRC, the crontab file, webmin, etc.

I will see if I can find how mythbackup is implemented and see if the script file can be expanded. Usually requests for new capabilities go better with patches.

A lot of custom information is already saved such as module configuration in /etc/mythtv/modules etc.

Thanks!

you can put anything you want to in the /myth/backup directory, and it will not be touched by an autoupgrade.
