Post subject:  New hardware, complete rebuild, still struggling :-(

My First build of knoppmyth was on
Abit kt7a mobo 512mb sdram 1.4ghz athlon wintv nova-t (pci) s3 virge pci vga

after alot of tinkering and not alot of joy i was pinning my hope on my problems arising from the via kt133 chipset of the kt7a

I bought a 'new' matx board (asrock K7S41GX mobo) on ebay.

So the new setup is now

K7S41GX with 256mb kingston ddr ram, athlon 1.4, wintv nova-t pci,
ati radeon 7000 agp card.

while waiting for the new board to arrive i discovered that i could get the nova-t so scan and lock to some channels with a kernel path applied.

so yesterday i got the new board and put all the hardware together (in a rather nice new coolermaster 620 case). Things were looking up as it all worked first time in less than 1 hour.

i installed knopmyth, found the same scanning problems with the wintv nova-t, so straight away i rebuilt the kernetl - this time a full rebuild rather than a patch - 2.6.13

Now scanning completes fine and livetv (or recorded) is very choppy and stuttery.

the usual reasons for this i gather are
1) not enough cpu power - ruled this out cos a) it worked with the same cpu on a diff board and b) it even happens playing back a recorded show.

2) drive not running at its top speed.

I tried
hdparm -c 1 /dev/hda

but no help

anyone have any other suggestions... i feel im running out of things to try.

Unless you've got the ATI driver and gotten them working you're not going to have Xv support which means that playback won't be smooth. Go look at the logs http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=374472&id=29&artlang=en and I'm guessing you'll find it says "can't find Xv support!"

Most of the advice you'll get around here is "use Nvidia not ATI" for one very simple reason - it's much, much easier to get working. There is a link on the wiki to some info for ATI but no nice writeups. As a matter of fact I just had to tell someone else this exact same thing a few hours ago in this thread: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5976

Well actually the 7000 should have xv support in the dri drivers, however the tvout stuff won't work. I admit I didn't look to see what type of output he was trying to use.

not tried the tvout yet - thats a finishing touch !
did look at /home/mythtv/.xsession-errors
and it does contain the error - couldn't find Xv support
at least thats something to work on - i wonder would the onboard video be better.

look in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and see what driver it is using, it may be using vesa if so you'll want to try ati or radeon

ok - took the ati card out and tried onboard video ...
this seems a fair bit better - almost watchable... however the picture still looks a bit 'floaty' and its not quite right still ....

where do i need to tell knoppmyth that im using a different card?
TRying to bring up the program guide from within livetv causes a crash of the frontend....

-- Im not one to give up easily - but Im starting to think i need a 'rest'.

well the first thing you will need to know is what kind of video the onboard is then see my previous post to see where to tell it what video card you have.

Hi declanh,

Any audio issues with the ASRock? I have the K7S41 (the cheap one) and it has been less than friendly. Com 1 connector in the way and also the front panel audio connectors. Runs R5A16 real nice except tv as I haven't a card that will fit because of the connectors being in the way. Mine also has audio issues.

When I diddle with the video I just do an auto upgrade so the hardware is sniffed properly. Do a back up first and it is almost a painless process. I also suggest staying away from Firefox for now.

video card is described as

"VGA Integrated Mirageā„¢ Graphics
Shared Memory Max. 64MB"
here

http://www.asrock.com/product/product_k7s41gx.htm

its currently using the VESA driver according to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
presumably thats what was autodetected for the radeon 7000

Audio seemed to be ok - although its hard to say for sure till the video is working ok ?

Why should I stay away from firefox ?

another thought - should i roll back
from kernel 2.6.13 to
2.6.12.6 - is it worth trying, or unlikely to make any difference?

Hi,

Audio is easy to check, just try to play anything. Rip a cd, play it. Do as root, find / -name *.wav then play one of them. Or just do a backup and listen for the tones.

Oh also, my asrock runs the vesa driver.

you will not get good video performance with the vesa driver. I have no idea what driver to use for a mirage chipset, you could have used ati or radeon like I suggested if you had left the ati card in there. You'll just have to google. to see what that chipset uses.

Hi,
My cheaper version of the asrock uses a SIS chip set. I would never recomend this board for KnoppMyth.
My older e-machine has been about the best for me although there are a couple of Dell models that work pretty good also.

yeah - I'm happy to put the ati card back in - i have googled but am struggling to see how i configure X for ati or radeon - how do i tell it the path of the ati driver?
