I don't get it. I have had nothing but problems since trying this and I read all these posts about how wonderfull everything is and how it all just worked. My install has been anyhitn but that.
I finally got the lan to work so now the only thing that works is reall mythweather.
When I select Watch TV... BLack screen
When I insert a DVD it quits and I read and find out that libdvdcss is not installed (paraphrasing)
BAsically I can't really get anything to really go and there is some serious documentation to this project but there are to many holes for newbies or weak users such as myself.
Where is there a line by line... do this... now this you know for the guy who is scared of this whole thing.
I have a brand new linux based HD card that I can't seem to do anyhting with and more hours on this project then I care to admit.
Sorry if it seems like crying... but it is. I mean help? Please... I just am tired of chasing my tail in circles.

We need specifics. Nothings works doesn't help anyone most of all you. Blank TV while watching TV. Well which tuner card is it (name, model, etc.). For legal reason, I cannot include anything to circumvent copy protection. Have you taken a log at the logs? Have you ran the frontend from an xterm and seen the output when something fails? Have you search the forum? You're not telling use anything you did to try and solve your problem(s).

Sorry for the rant but a few days of failure can have that effect on me.
Specifics
Asus P4P800-e Deluxe motherboard
3.0G Pentium 4 HT 800bus
1G ram DDR-400
160G Seagate HD on IDE as primary (no other drive)
Asus (Nvidia) FX 5200 8X VGA/DVI/TV-O
Samsung 532 combo CDRW/DVD 52/32/52/16x
pcHDTV HD-3000 HDTV card
So the LAN on the motherboard is not detected...
In another thread and someone tought me about
<ctrl><alt><F2>
modprobe sk98lin
netcardconfig
<alt><F7>
That works well enough that I can get myth weather to work.
Untill I reboot and then I have to do that again
In the prior install I would get constant errors of "mythbackend does not. seem to be running..."
WHen I was setting up the Videocards there is an option for the HD-3000. But reading tought me that I am supposed to use some other setting then I can scan channels.
When I select lWatch TV for the first time I am not getting that "backend" complaint, but it is just a black screen. Hit ESCAPE all day and it makes no differance. Just have to wait for it to time out or something.
The real annoying part is that I have a almost line item same system as the system mentioned on this webpage
http://wendy.seltzer.org/mythtv/
When I try to play a DVD I get some error telling me about encrypted DVDs and then there is that nice... "if you read it carefully..." Well I guess I don't read well. I sure don't see "THIS IS HOW YOU INSTALL IT."
Any help would be great as I make zero progress on my own.

First, get a notebook and start keeping a journal of all the steps you take. You should describe your system hardware in detail and what steps you have done. Probably if its hosed up, be prepared to wipe the system and start from scratch.
Is it a pcHDTV HD-3000 card?
Try this:
http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... 3000_HOWTO
You have the basic install instructions, right?
http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?id=KnoppMythInstall
I recommend would be to get a basic KnoppMyth system working with a plain NTSC tuner before making the jump to HDTV.

Why do I have the sneaky suspicion someone is trying to use the EFF install instructions (for R5A9) using R5A16 KnoppMyth.
Can't get there from here.

That link is exactly of what I speak when I say that I had to change the setting on the HD card.
Plus now there is a window in the middle of my MYTH screen that says "fbsetbg: Something went wrong while setting the wallpaper.
run `display -geometry 1024x768+0+0 -window root /usr/local/lib/knoppmyth.png` from xterm to find..." rest out of screen

THANK YOU!
One problem is banished. Network card will start up now.
Now is there a webget or something so I can get the required libraries?
What about the ability to have different monitors? Like Is there a way to set it up so I can select
S-Video or VGA or DVI?
Plus I still need to get that setup for the scan ratios.
My TV I want to connect to is a 16:9 720p DLP. I would like to output HD that I record to this TV on DVI.
DVD output in S-Video is no big deal.
If I could get DVD output to be 480i on DVI out... that would be awesome as I have an exceptional scaler.
BTW I just ripped a CD and that works as does playback from media files once ripped. So somethings are working.
(feeling about one inch tall these days...)

You took the poll and wrote down what you had to do to get your system working, right?
Your input is valuable and might just be the big help someone else needs to get their system working.
Thanks!

Fellas,
Thanks for all the help so far.
What I ment about apt-get is: nowhere does it say...
"apt-get install "XXXXXX"
This is what is required to get commercial DVDs to play."
IS there some reason why it can't be written out? Legal?

The DMCA makes it illegal in the US to distribute technology that allows circumventing copy protection techniques. Rather than risk any liability under the DMCA, cesman has chosen not to include such things in the distro, nor to even mention such things by name here on the forum. His forum, his rules.
If you read the xine howto on http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/ you will find a link to xine's documentation, where you can find out what you need to get. Moreover, if you search the forum, you may find some other hints on script examples that can do the same install.

and if you think that's obsurd we agree, but if you do a google search about the issue you will see that all kinds of people have gotten sued by big pocket organizations just for linking to information about bypassing encryption on dvd's. and noone here has big pockets to fight for our first amendment rights in court.
