Ok, I heard about KnoppMyth on This Week in Tech, and man oh man, I want to set one up. I spent the whole night last night reading up on this, reading documentation and whatnot. I do, however have a few questions. I think the documentation is assuming you already have a basic knowledge of Linux and stuff. I know some stuff about building PCs, but have never worked with Linux. So, please, be patient with me, I am still learning :)

So, here are the questions.

1. Does the KnoppMyth .ISO install everything I will need for it to work? If I buy all the hardware needed, with nothing on the harddrive, I can boot from the CD and install and everything will work? I have noticed a lot of talk of linux, and I am just assuming that the Linux install is included in the .ISO
If I do need to install Linux before I install KnoppMyth, where can I get it?

2. I read a good majority of stuff about the hardware needed for this system to work. One thing I have gathered is that the Tuner cards are the part that can be tricky. I want to be able to record 2 shows at once, so, I know that I will be needing 2 tuner cards. So, my question is, can someone post all of the hardware that they have successfully used? A complete machine that is in working order and they are happy with? I hope I can get a list of exactly the parts I should buy and assemble.

3. I have direct TV at my house. I have it hooked up in the living room, but I will most likely have my KnoppMyth box in my room. I dont currently have a Direct TV box in my room. Am I going to need to buy a brand new Direct TV box? Or can I just run the cable directly into the Knopp machine?

If anyone can help me, I would be soo sooooo appreciative. Or, if anyone knows where I can find this information, that would work too.

Thanks again!

1. Yes
2. Hint: try the Tier 1 section of the forum
3. I have regular cable, no idea. I'm sure a search of the forum would give an answer

One hint as you jump into this: there are a lot of very knowledgable and helpful people here who can provide very detailed answers to help you solve any problems you might have, but they all presumably have jobs and limited free time and will be much more willing to help if you have already done some research yourself to avoid asking questions that have been answered numerous times already. Use this link to search the forum using Google, it's easier to find what you are looking for. I had zero Linux knowledge when I started this and I've had my Knoppmyth box running smoothly since January (with one blip in the middle when I got bold and hosed something), good luck and welcome to the forum.

Hi,

You can do a lot with KnoppMyth. Depending on what hardware and a few other varibles, you should be able to get a box running. Use and bookmark this link as one of the fine gentlemen made a special link just to help us all.

You may wish to put together something simple just to get a feel for the install, and sort of learn the "inards" . You don't even need a tuner to start.

If you have a problem, be specific and a hardware list, if some one can help they will.

Good luck, once you get started I am sure you will enjoy KnoppMyth. Try the R5A16
