Just wondering how most of you guys are adjusting things for optimum picture. There are a bunch of things to fiddle with and I was trying to come up with a sequence that would yield the best results, if anyone has stumbled upon such a thing. For example, how many ways can we adjus brightness and contrast? On the monitor ... with the 'G' key in MythTV ... in nvidia-settings ... and who knows where else. Is one place considered the best place to adjust this?

Currently my pictures aren't bad. There's some ghosting, which could be antenna or the IVTV driver I'd think. The ghosting mostly shows up as a blue-ish/purple-ish shadow to the right of the main image. Not terrible, but noticeable. The pictures look a bit "soft", for whatever that's worth. Blacks seem overly black - maybe too dark and/or contrasty. Colors seem a tad muted - except the reds, which are more exhaggerated than muted. I don't expect wonders out of my monitor. I just threw an old one in there to get MythTV up and running. An 8 (?) year old ViewSonic V17.

What I would most like to correct is the ghosting/color fringing and the overall sharpness. Are there configuration settings available to adjust that? I've already aimed my off-the-air antenna (medium directional) to get things as best as possible there. I have a good strong signal (17 miles to the transmitters, clear line of sight).

I'm afraid tha this is still more of an art rather than a science most of the time.

We had a rather extensive discussion about this a while back. Search around here for a thread with me an cesman in it (I forget who else was involved maybe liv2cod), and the words "test images" and "gamma". Once you find some decent test images adjust your settings so that they look like they're supposed to. I used some of the tools discussed in that thread and nvidia-settings to do this. Once you've done that, and verified with DVD playback, you can start to think about adjusting the capture settings.
