First, the question (I'm a Linux newbie): How can I check whether KnoppMyth is using my swap partition? The reason for my question: Since I was never able to get R5A16 to work with my components (the infamous black screen with an nVidia FX5200 card), I thought I would try R5A22. First of all, MythTV now seems to work fine! However, in doing the manual install of R5A22 (I have a SATA disk), I noticed that the final parameter screen, where one checks that everything is OK just before KnoppMyth is installed, says that a Swap Partition was not found, even though I had created one. During my numerous manual installs of R5A16, the final parameter screen always said it found a Swap Partition. Thanks for the help. |

I did an automatic install of R5A22, but have seen something similar. In the system information screen, it says I have no swap. I've checked my fstab and double checked everything to confirm that I do indeed have 500MB of swap. Myth doesn't see it for some reason though. To answer your question though, if your swap partition exists and is turned on (did you run swapon?), Myth does have access to it. |

easy way to see if it is using it run top should tell you how much swap it sees how much is used etc. |

Yes, I entered the "mkswap /dev/sda5 && swapon /dev/sda5" line at the appropriate place during the installation (sda5 being my logical swap partition). You say that "Myth doesn't see it for some reason." Do you mean simply that the information screen doesn't report it properly even though Myth is using it, or that Myth is not using the swap partition even though it has access to it? |

Myth doesn't decide whether or not to use swap. I believe that's controlled at the kernel level. Swap is just virtual memory that the system uses as additional RAM. If you have 512MB of RAM or more, it doesn't matter that much anyways. I rarely use swap even on my laptop with a full KDE installation. |
