... Now it won't load at startup. So I need to log in and do it manually as root :(

I've done it before, and read the fix on here somewhere but I'm fooshed if I can find it again! As far as I can remember I need to delete a file to allow the mythtv user to re-create it upon starup..

Anyone?

Well that was silly. You probably created a file with the wrong ownership and permissions that's blocking the backend from starting. Searching for postings containing the word "chown" might reveal what you want. Running the backend by hand from the command line might also reveal an error message that points you in the right direction.

"Well that was silly."

I'll consider myself told off then

Will have a bash at it tonight and post my findings here, for documentation's sake.. I really should start keeping a log of what I'm doing...

Shaamone, have a look at the contents of the file /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log

It should reveal what you need to change (chmod 777, or rm, as root).

If there are no problems there, look in the frontend's error log (~mythtv/.xsession-errors)

Gaah! Not 777! Bad Nigel! No biscuit! Here is the right thing to do to that directory and files. As root:
Code:
chown mythtv:mythtv /var/log/mythtv /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log*
