Post subject:  NTP SOCKET IN USE (what does this mean and how do i fix it)
ok, so i try and run the ntp thing that will update the time to the one specified in the arguments.

so hers what it looked like:

su
ntpddate ntp1.sf-bay.org
12 NOV 13:25:11 ntpdate [4902]:
the ntp socket is in use, exiting


ok, so what does this mean, how do i fix it?

u need to stop "ntp-server", then you can use ntpdate

If you want to stop it starting on boot, run as root:

update-rc.d -f ntp-server remove

Hi,
This seems to be something new that cesman added to A22. Rather than immediately disable it, see if you can use it. You can then set all your internal boxes to it also as it is a server. Just forget about ntpdate for a day or two and use the already running server.

There is one file in /etc/ntp,conf that holds the server you want to sync with.

The default should be fine,
server pool.ntp.org

I changed mine to narrow the search
server north-america.pool.ntp.org

You can check to see what is going on with the system using the ntpq tool. Give it a day or so as you may like it.

$ ntpq
at the ntpq> enter a ? to see the options
$ ntpq> ?
enter peers to see who the server it is working with and details
$ ntpq> peers
$ ntpq> quit

R5A22 sets up ntp by default. As far as I can tell "it just plain works" my box is now constantly dead on what http://www.time.gov/ shows for my timezone. You shouldn't need to run ntpdate seperately.

Darth, is your time out by a constant number of hours? Or is it just gaining time very quickly?

How often does it check NTP ? I'm on a modem, not a LAN, so the startup check doesn't find a server. With A16 I used to quit myth, open the modem & do mythfilldatabase & follow with a ntpdate command. Can't do the ntpdate now. How long would the modem need to be left running with Myth up, to do a time check ?

If you followed the command of mad above i.e.:

update-rc.d -f ntp-server remove
this will stop the automatic ntp update process and you will then be able to run the update manually as you previously did.

With my scipt that is on this forum somewhere it does the first update on boot, so if you connected you internet connection and then rebooted your Mythbox it would update.

I understand the 'fix' will let me run it manually, the question is just leave it alone ?
A reboot will drop my modem connection, so i won't get it at startup. If it runs say hourly, leaving the modem run while Myth is up would eventually get an update. So I'm asking how frequently does it query a server ?
