Post subject:  yet another new theme "RETRO"

Hi

Just a note to let you know that I'm working on a new theme. My intent is to make a clean and simple theme. Give it a spinn. http://www.aldorf.no/mythtv
Constructive comments are welcommed.
It should also go well with the OSD isthmus I made some time ago. Isthmus is going to get a facelift as soon as I get the time.

Looks great, I too am a big fan of the isthumus theme (wish it was the default with KnoppMyth  ) We may be lucky and have Cesman include it in the next release of KnoppMyth.

You made Isthmus? Dude! That is my favorite OSD. I wish it were included in the default KnoppMyth install.

I'll check out Retro just because I liked Isthmus so much!

I've had the frontend crash a few times since ive added this theme.
Mind you i have just added a second tuner card too - so im not sure which is the issue.

Retro is AWESOME!! I love this theme! It is so clean, and easy on the eyes.
The isthmus OSD is also very nice.
Both of these are now my defaults!

+1 for making this the default theme for KnoppMyth!

gerhard - Time for some better installation instructions and housecleaning. Most of the files in those themes have either bogus ownership or permissions. I ended up doing the following:
Code:
cd /usr/share/mythtv/themes
tar zxvf /root/Retro.tar.gz
tar xvf /root/isthmus.tar
chown -R root:root Retro isthmus
find Retro isthmus -type f -print0 | xargs -0 chmod a-x,go-w

So 9 out of 10 for appearance, and 4 out of 10 for housekeeping...

its a PVR box, not a web server. :P
You don't happen to be a sys admin do you? hehe. :o

No, not that it's relevant, but I'm a systems architect/engineer/programmer. The real issue is that good habits are good habits. Security isn't the only reason for getting the permissions right, since they provide useful clues for what a file is supposed to be. This isn't the MS-DOS/MSWindows world where you blindly execute stuff because it has a .COM or .EXE extension. Unix executable files come in many forms and for many reasons. Getting sloppy about stuff like this is how we ended up in a world where systems routinely crash and everyone thinks it's normal.

I'm also a serious chef and I do my best to teach EVERYONE who plays in my kitchen safe knife technique. I've top quality knives which are kept very VERY sharp so that they're the best most useful tools possible, but this also means that they demand respect. If a guests knife techique worries me, I don't let them near the knives since I don't want them or the knives getting damaged. Anything else would be irresponsible at best.

well now that you put it that way...

edit:
Just realized you were making a analogy.

Anyways, I was simply making a joke, no need to take it so seriously. I do agree with you though, good habits are good habits.

Anyway, both themese are very nice, glad to see such talent in the community.

I,m not a system administrator but my guess what happened here was that I did the theme in windows where my mythtv/themes directory is a samba share for easy access. So far the theme is just a start and as soon as I feel its finished I'll do better houskeeping. Anyways glad I got 9 out of 10 for appearance.
