Post subject:  CLI on the TV

I have a wireless keyboard on my system. I would like to ctl-alt-f1 to a CLI to make some changes, but when I do the screen rolls and I can not possible see what I am typing. I know it must have something to do with refresh rates, but I am not sure where to make the changes. I have a Nvidia 5200 card in the system.

Thanks in advance!

Did you opt to install bootsplash? There are known issues with the console when using bootsplash with nvidia cards. Ensure that /etc/lilo.conf has a line vga=normal in it and then re run lilo. Reboot and if that was your problem, it may work.

I remember the warning when I was installing, and I did not install boot splash for that reason. Do I still need to go into lilo to make sure it is set right?

Also make sure that you have set the sync ranges to those recommended in the "pamphlet for knoppmyth". http://mysettopbox.tv/doc.html

Where do I put the sync ranges? the XF86Config-4 file? If I do make the changes there will it affect the CLI interface at all? My understanding is that the XF86Config-4 file will only affect the GUI interface.

Yeah, you are probably right. Did you check the vga=normal thing?

Sorry it took so long. The vga-normal is set already

I am not too sure if it matters, but the screen starts rolling the second the computer starts, even in POST before Linux starts.

That sounds to me like the standard signal the Card is outputting is not capable with your TV. if the POST screen is "rolling" there is prob not much you can do about it. how are you connected? RCA, or Svidieo? (Asumming Svid). On my setup, if Svideo is plugged in, it outputs a video signal to the TV. my only other suggestion would be to try another card if you have one available.

You may be able to tinker with the VGA settings in lilo, and get one more compatable. Those more knowledgable then me would have to help on that.
