Can't play ripped DVDs/Don't know how to ssh/S-video doesn't work.

OK I'm new to linux so have mercy.
First I tried to rip some dvds to the hard drive and got .vob and .avi files recorded. But now I can't seem to be able to play them. What do I have to do to to either install the codecs or if there already there get them running?

OK I know about ssh and what it's for. I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.9 and I have a SSH browser. I just don't know how to set it up to run on the Mythbox. I know this is a basic question so if anyone has a link for a expiation that might be best to have.

And for a what seems to be a reoccurring question my S-video out isn't working. It works during boot up, then gets a scrambled image. I have a geforce FX 5500 with Knoppmyth.

Did you install "_____" so you can rip dvd's?? it sounds like you did, or you would get an AVI file, it would just die. did you use import dvd in myth, or did you copy the VOB's over? You shouldnt need any codecs installed to play xvid.. (which is what myth rips the movies into if you do excellent or lower." did you try and play the movies through myth?

If your using knoppmyth ssh is started by defualt.. just ssh in the IP address.
Im getting the idea that you not using knoppmyth because of the types of problems your having.. what version of knoppmyth/whatever are you using?

Again without know what distro you using this is an impossible question. the newest knoppmyth installes the nvidia drivers (which are needed) you only need to tell XFree86-4 to enable Svideo. add this to the "Device" section of that file:
Code:
Option      "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"
Option      "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"

bottom line in order to help you we need alot more info then you gave us.. like any error? and what how you did the thing that didnt work ie (ripped through myth, instead of by hand) and MOST important, what version of knoppmyth are you using.

Why does it seem that some nights you end up reading the same questions and posting the same responses over and over and over... (And BTW - Yes, this should work for a FX5500 just like it worked for a FX5200 and an MX4.)

Because some people are so hopelesly lost in something they don't even know what to enter into the search field. OK i'm going to try that after I upgrade. I'll post tomorrow.

That was actually more of a rhetorical clustering question. The questions seem to come in odd clumps, tonight a wad of XF86Config-4 questions, another day a bunch of IVTV card questions, another day a blob of disk questions, sitll another day everyone has DVD problems...
