Post subject:  Suggestions Please for building a Myth/KnoppMyth System

I'd like to build a Myth system. However, I'm not sure if I can build just a front-end system.

Here are my Goals

- Small Quiet system
- DVD / Music library (Main Goal)
I'm tired of having my kid’s man handle my DVD's
and CD's

- Encode shows for my Pocket PC when I travel
- Use my Direct Tivo as my backend encoder (optional)
- DVD Burner to save shows
- Replace my old stereo system with a Myth system
My Direct TV Tivo sound plays through my old Dolby Pro-Logic 5.1 via a RCA connection. No sound comes out of my TV

- I'd also like to use my Direct TV Tivo remote
It has a switch for Satellite receiver or TV

I think you're getting into waaaaay uncharted territory trying to make your Tivo your primary encoder. Tivo doesn't even record in standard MPEG2 format, making it problematic to play back Tivo recordings on non-Tivo devices. Myth is absolutely, resolutely tied to its MySQL backend database. Since you're primarily a satellite user, you'd have to use something like serial port control to talk to the Tivo and tell it which channel to tune to, using it like a dumb sat receiver. You'd also have to have an encoder card in the Tivo box, effectively duplicating your Tivo's hardware.

In my own case, I own a Tivo and use satellite for "backup" duties. I switch to it when I want to watch South Park. When I'm watching network TV on high-definition (most of the time) I switch to my KnoppMyth box. I could also record satellite on my KnoppMyth box (using a second receiver) but I'm not motivated enough to do that. I just don't watch the "extra content" channels that much. I still watch Paul Sr. and Pauley scream at each other while building absurdly priced motorcycles, but that's about it for satellite.

Have you heard of MythTivo

http://tivo-mplayer.sourceforge.net/mythtivo.html

I currently have a Serial cable for my Direct Tivo. I also figured that if I wanted to watch Live TV I would just switch back to my Direct Tivo box.

Otherwise I was hoping to use MythTivo.

In reading this website it seems like Matt had MythTivo pulling shows off his Tivo's Now Showing List.

Also, I currently pull shows off my Direct Tivo and recoded them for my pocket PC using TYShow and Windows Media encoder.

I just scanned the web links you provided. Other than the name, I can see no connection to MythTv at all. He used the name "MythTivo" to connote some functionality, but I don't see any ACTUAL connection to Myth. I think he's hijacked the name and set expectations which can't be met. As far as I can tell this is a hacked version of mplayer that can handle MythTv streams and play them on a Windoze box.
