My setup has been running fine until just a few days ago when it suddenly wouldn't perform a shutdown. As always I just went into the knoppmyth section in mythtv and selected shutdown. I noticed one odd thing, usually when I select shutdown i hear a short beep from the speaker and then the shutdown process starts, not so anymore.

I am quite new to this and am quite proud to have managed to set up a box that has been running perfectly. This problem however has taken me to the deep end of the pool and i am out of ideas. I have been searching for clues but as I am uncertain what to look for and where to look for clues I would be happy to get some pointers.

Basically what happens is:

-I select shutdown
-The shutdownsplash screen with the progressbar comes up
-The progressbar reaches 100% and the harddrive spins down and fans stop. Thats it.

The splash graphics stays, and psu still running(um well, obviously).

If I pull the cord and do a cold restart it takes ages before it even passes post.

I am sorry for the sparse info, I can't really describe the problem in a better way atm. There probably is a log somewhere I can look in but I have no idea which one.

edit: found this link and will look into those logs (if I ever get it to boot again...).

Try hitting F2 from the startup and/or shutdown screens that should kick you into verbose mode so you can see the messages. If it is taking a long time it is probably doing a fsck and may even be asking for input. could have been the same thing on the shutdown.

Thanks for the F2 tip xsecrets, very handy indeed. However...I'm starting to think this is a hardware issue. When I press the power button to start up all thet happen is the fans start, the disk spins up and then nothing. If I then press the power button again it starts the boot procedure. It quite clearly has nothing to do with knoppmyth as it appears way long before anything is loaded from the harddrive. Also I noticed I can no longer force the machine to shutdown by holding the powerbutton for a few seconds, it just enters some sort of hibernation(sp?) state.

Maybe time for a new comp...

Ok so I hit F2 and went into verbose mode on shutdown and here's the output:

is acpi enabled in the bios?

Yes I believe it is. There is no option in the bios saying ACPI per se but there is one called Power management/APM which is set to enabled.

I wonder if it is something in the ACPI cicuitry(sp?) that has gone corrupt? If so is there usually a way to reset a motherboard to solve issues like that?

You may get some relief by reseting your BIOS to "safe defaults" and them going back through and reconfiguring it.

Any luck figuring out why your computer won't shut down? I just finished a new install and everything seems to be working but it won't shut down. It reboots from the Knoppmyth-Reboot button. but the shutdown button just stops responding when it gets to 100%.

Sorry for not keeping this thread updated. I have not yet solved the issue, I tried using a different powersupply unit to see if it had anything to do with it but no luck. I am now starting to lean towards it being a software issue. I am running R5A22 so I probably need to do a clean install anyways to be able to upgrade in the future so when I am finished doing this I'll report back again.

I am the same issue with R5A22 where sometimes it shutdown and sometimes it wouldn't. Upgrading to R5B7 solved the issue.

Okay, add one more to that list. My box running R5A22 also doesn't shut
down properly a good portion of the time. I've checked my power settings,
and they're all as they should be. The screen eventually goes black, and the
power light on the case flashes intermittently. Sounds to me like it has
something to do with power management going awry, yes?

Well, a freshly installed R5B7 did not solve my problem. I am now planning on building a new system anyway so i'm not going to try and solve this issue anymore. Let's just hope my new hardware won't end up screwed like this one did.

I also have a shutdown problem, i'd say 50& of the time it shuts down ok, 50% of the time it does not, it hangs on the splash screen and there is no specific point that the progress bar stops at

I tend to find that this happens more often when i've been running the system for long time, usually having played video files from CD in MythVideo

If i turn it on for an hour or so and fiddle with music and pics for example it tends to shutdown ok

i suspect it may have something to do with the CD drive, as i've always had a problem with eject/automount, more investigation work neede though
