Post subject: | How to gain access to the Mythweb over the internet? |
I am new to the Linux world and on a steep learning curve, but i think im doing okay at the min. (manage to get a mythtv box up and running) There are a couple issues with it, i will solve them in time readin through this website. (thank you) But im trying some of the nice features first ![]() ![]() My question is: How do i access my mythbox from the internet, say at work. I have a windows machine with internet sharing enabled. and the mythbox connect through that. I have accessed Mythtv internally. I have a fixed IP from my ISP. Thanks in advance Jim |

Hmm...I haven't set up internet connection sharing with windows in a long time...but...just like any set up with NAT, you would need to have your mythbox set up with a static NAT IP (192.168.1.153 is mine, for instance), and in the rules for internet connection sharing, you would port forward port 80 from the internet to your myth box's NAT IP. Here is an article on doing it with Windows ICS: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sha ... ration.htm . I suggest you buy a router though...much better for this kind of thing, and a lot safer than leaving a windows box connected straight to the internet. You can often pick up wirelessG routers from CompUSA or Best Buy for $5 after $50 of rebates on a good weekend. All that's left is finding out what your actual IP address on the internet is. Easy enough...go to http://www.whatismyip.com , and that's it. Oh, and port forwarding port 22 to your myth box lets you do cool stuff, like using nxclient for windows from work, giving you an SSH-tunneled remote GUI. -Rich |

![]() Just wanted to play at this time. Would it be similar with a router? Sorry im new to this. ![]() Your windows machine, with internet connection sharing, performs the identical function as a router. Setting up a router for port forwarding is different from router to router, but they will all come with instructions on how to do it. From your Myth Box's perspective, as well as the perspective of the internet, your windows machine is a router. |

you may want to secure it with at least a password http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=SecuringMythWebHowTo keep in mind, a knoppmyth box is not initially build to be secure on the Big Mean Internet. |

If you forward port 22, make sure you change mythtv's password & ensure root has a strong password. |
