I go into alsamixer as root, make my changes and hit Escape.

Then I run: alsactl store
(which should save my settings)

I added: alsactl restore
to /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh
(which should restore my settings on boot)

Is there a permissions issue or something that I am missing?

I am actually having the same problem. I added another command to bootmisc.sh to automatically start webmin (". /etc/init.d/webmin start") and that works fine, but the "alsactl restore" statement does not appear to be working. I have to run the command manually after restarting for it to restore my alsa settings.

I'm wondering if it needs to be run as a certain user. Since the X11 session is run by user mythtv and not root, perhaps runs the restore as root on bootup is not sufficient.
