Post subject:  I need some help with SAMBA / NFS on A22

In the past I have never had a problem with NFS exports or SAMBA shares. A few couple of months back, both just stopped working for me. Being home sick I have had some time to revisit this, and spent a good bit of time failing to resolve the problem.

I have been through the the NFSHowTo, and UsingSambaHowTo at the Wiki numerous times. Which is a little silly at this point since I have written here at the forums a few times to walk others through this process. It is so simple, and with the last several releases, most of this is not even needed. I have gone through what I can think of in the logs trying to find some indication of what is wrong, but nothing. Basically, the clients keep timing out when trying to connect to a windows share or NFS export. Both my Mac's and a Windows box I set up just to trouble shoot this. I can SFTP to the Knoppmyth box without issue, and a port scan shows everything is open to the needed ports as well. Though every single client computer trying to connect times out.

What log file am I missing? I even reinstalled NFS common, and the kernel server to no avail. Any guidance to where to look to try and trouble shoot this would be great.

Are you poking at it from the command line or using webmin? I highly recommend the later. Memory tells me that a couple installs back some default changed and I had to fiddle with the settings. I remember ending up deleteing all my NFS exports and mounts and recreating them, but don't remember what setting needed tweaking.

Man... at this point I have tried everything. For NFS I removed everything and then apt-get installed it all again. I removed the exports, then put those back. I tried configuring and reconfiguring both SAMBA and NFS from the command line and webmin.. No dice. I have set both of these up so many times in the past with different flavors of linux, and knoppmyth. I just can't seem to get what is missing with what I have now. As I look back, it may have broke with my A22 upgrade when it was first released. I thought that maybe it worked in the beginning of A22, but looking closer, I am pretty sure that when I did the upgrade from A16 on October 22 that it stopped working. I still have my dd image file of hda1 from A16, and I mounted it, and checked the config files there and everything seems to match. I am stumped. Sitting at a working A22 (accept for this one part) back-end in the middle of new programs I am hesitant to muddle through redoing my backend and screwing something bigger up.

Here is something from log.smbd when trying to connect from a client:
Quote:
[2006/01/19 19:19:42, 0] rpc_parse/parse_prs.c:prs_mem_get(537)
prs_mem_get: reading data of size 2 would overrun buffer.
[2006/01/19 19:19:42, 0] rpc_server/srv_pipe.c:api_pipe_bind_req(919)
api_pipe_bind_req: unable to unmarshall RPC_HDR_RB struct.

After redoing all the NFS exports and re-adding:
Quote:
/myth *(rw)
/myth/video/Movies *(rw)
The client returns a error saying that the username or password is not correct. I even tried with the mythtv use and still nothing. I don't know where NFS dumps its logs to look up what it is returning on the knoppmyth side.

OK, here are what I'm using successfully to export my /myth partition to the local private network (see the bottom): http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=NFSHowTo

And the mount options from my workstation:
Code:
black2:/myth on /myth type nfs (rw,nosuid,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,soft,addr=192.168.1.103)

I went through all that again.. I did manage to get one NFS export to work, but it kept disconnecting on the client side. I got AFP up and running, and though NFS also has reconnect features, AFP seems more stable with my OSX clients. But, it is also not 100%. I am starting to suspect either NIC problem in the Myth box, or something else. Though when transferring via SFTP from the same clients to the knoppmyth box over gigabit I get great speeds. > 18MB, so that may not be the issue. Is there any other known networking problems with A22?
