| Post subject: | Moving existing install to a new machine |
I would like to move my existing R5A30.2 install to a new machine. Does anyone know if either of the following two approaches will work? 1. Simply move the two disk drives from the old mchine to the new machine. This would be the simplest approach, but I don't know if Linux will deal with the changes. 2. If that won't work, what about moving the disk drives from the old machine to the new machine and executing the "auto upgrade" procedure. Will this result in the install procedures reconfiguring for the new hardware? I am moving from a dell motherboard, P4-2.4ghz non-hyper-threaded CPU to an ECS motherboard, P4-2.8ghz hyper-threaded CPU. I will be moving my FX5200 video card from the old system to the new system. I have already verified that the new motherboard/CPU combo works with a Knoppmyth install. Marc |

make sure you do a backup first, then just move the disks. it should handle the move fine, if it doesn't you can then do the auto upgrade which should fix anything that didn't work. though I really don't think you'll need to. |

Hi marc.aronson, Just swapping the drives should work, you will most likely need to run netcardconfig and alsaconf to get things on track. The moving of the 5200 should be fine making xserver happy, probably will have to change the pci bus address for the tuner card also. Mike |

Mike: You were 100% correct on needing to run netcardconfig & alsaconf. Both tuners (PVR-250 & DCT-6200 via firewire) are running properly w/ out any changes. Thanks for the pointers -- you saved me a bunch of time! marc |

I am migrating my backend to another machine and I need to revert back to the original driver installed by the initial knoppmyth install procedure for an old TNT2 card. (6629 doesn't work properly on this card, but I know from past experience that the default driver installed by knoppmyth install CD does.) Is there a script I can run to deinstall 6629 and re-install the default driver? Thanks! marc |

 Which default? 7174? Or the "nv" driver? For 7174 it should be as easy as:
Code: /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh
For the NV driver you need to either find the previous version (look in "XF86Config-4.1st") or edit your XF86Config-4 to use the nv driver, and load the "dri" and "GLcore" modules. You may also want to enable "sw_cursor". |

Hi marc.aronson, What are you using for the XF86Config-4 Driver ? The ATI Rage TNT2 should work with the "nvidia" ... Mike |

Whoopsie! That doesn't seem right... Shouldn't that be using the vesa drivers or the ATI drivers?  Sorry all I caught was the 2 before, and you were talking about Nvidia drivers and my brain leapt to MX2... No idea what the right driver is but reverting to your original XF86Cofig-4 as described should get the right stuff...

I think 6629 is the default nvidia driver. And it should support the TNT. it was the 7??? drivers where they removed support for the older cards. |

The nv driver was the one I was looking for -- thanks! I used XF86Conifg4.1st and all is well. My TNT2 card is very old -- only has 16mb of memory. Perhaps that's why 6629 driver didn't display things properly for me. Thanks again for the help! Marc |
