Hi I am an extreme beginner to Linux. Imagine me as a toddler learning how to speak the language of Linux. That being said what comes natural and seems logical to most of you on this forum is completely foreign to me.

Here is my Question. I know how to install Knoppmyth R5A30.2 and have 2 pvr250s working thanks to the auto install feature, but when I go to watch tv my program listings are off. To be specific they are 8hours behind to the current live channels im watching. I did a search first because I know that most questions have been asked before and found this thread that I think explains what to do.

Quote:
Your system time should be set to local time. Use tzconfig or webmin and set your timezone and time correctly. Use hwclock --systohc or webmin to push the setting from the system clock into the BIOS hardware clock. Then reboot and make sure your settings stuck.

Now run mythtv-setup (you may need to stop the backend first) and answer "yes" to the question about clearing your program guide data. Make sure your video source is set up correctly, then exit and run mythfilldatabase as the myttv user.

As root:
Code:
man tzconfig
man hwclock
tzconfig
hwclock --systohc
reboot

After reboot as root again:
Code:
/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop
mythtv-setup
/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start
su - mythtv /usr/bin/mythfilldatabase

Here is the original Thread:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8006

How do I do this?
How to use tzconfig and where to find it?
How to run mythtv-setup?
How to run Mythfilldatabase to enter in the codes?

If I can get help with this I should finally be able to put this bad boy in my living room.

First of all the subject of your thread should have a sumary of your question in it. "How do I do stuff?" doesn't really help too much.

All thoes commands must be run from a terminal console. You can access a terminal console a couple of different ways. The easiest I would say is to run the program putty on a windows machine and ssh into your mythTV computer (use the ip-address of the mythTV machine). That will allow you to type commands into a console while viewing instructions in a web browser.

See the linux tips page on the wiki. It has lots of examples and explainations. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LinuxTips

BTW - Good on you for searching and finding that yourself!

Ok lets try a step by step from another relative noob

Download and install putty on your windows box

If your mythbox is hooked up to a monitor the command "ifconfig" (No Quotes)

should give you your ip address

Now put this in the connect dialoge box in putty and that will allow you to connect to your myth box At the prompt type "root" then enter

at the password prompt type in the password you set up for root at your install.

now you can run the above commands

Ok, just wanted to say sorry about the post header that I gave. I know help me with this or help me with that is not very helpful for anyone to feel helpful. Ill say help once for just for the help of it.

Since I posted my first message I kept busy trying to figure out what I could do. What made sense to me was that maybe I was overlooking something during the install process. I figured out that I could set the local timezone during the initial setup and this has solved my problem with the time issues.

I just wanted to say thanks again for all the he/ (think I used this word enough) support! :D

Well that's one way to do it I suppose... ;-)

Unix is command line oriented. There are several easy ways to get a command line session and become the "root" user so you can do maintenance. You WILL need to learn how to do this. Be brave, it really doesn't hurt at all, it's more of a tingling sensation.

1) Hold Ctl-Alt and hit F1. This should switch you to another virtual console showing a text display with a login prompt. F2, F3, ... up to F6 should all work. Type "root" for the user name, hit Enter, then type the admin password you selected at install time, and hit Enter again.

2) Exit the MythTV frontend GUI by hitting Esc until it asks, "Do you really want to exit?" then select yes, you'll see a desktop with a penguin on a couch. Hitting Alt-X will pop up a text window as the "mythtv" user. Type "su -", hit Enter and type the password for the "root" user followed by Enter after it prompts you.

3) Connect from a remote system using an ssh client like "putty". You should get a login prompt. Login with the "root" username and password as described above.

After successfully completing any of those three options, you should see a command prompt that looks something like this:
Code:
root@black2:~#

You'll see the machine name you picked at install time rather than "black2". You're now talking to the Unix "Bourne Again Shell" (it's a pun, and a very, very bad one, which I won't bother to explain) AKA "bash" as the root user. You may see this called "getting a root shell". You can now enter the example commands.

See that didn't hurt, did it? The stretching feeling is normal, it's just your mind expanding.
