I have noticed that a lot of people here have written scripts that run ntpdate and added the script to their crontab. Is there a reason to do this instead of using ntpd?

By default ntpd should probe time servers between every 60 and 1024 seconds and check for updates. This seems much more straight forward than scripting, unless there is some problem with debian or knoppix and ntpd.

Just curious.

Mostly historical at this point. The newer versions set up ntpd out of the box and it works a treat. The only problem is that now that my system clock is always dead on, it has become much more obvious just how much slop there is in some of the network schedules. ;-)
