I'd like to replace XFree86 in my knoppmyth setup with Xorg 6.9. Is this crazy? I saw some previous threads about this for an earlier version of Xorg, but didn't really get a sense if anyone was successful or not.

The reason I want to do this is partly to experiment, but mostly that the via epia video driver support is better in Xorg. Better modes such as 720x480NoScale are available and in fact native television resolutions work correctly (unlike in the current XFree86 where 720x480 wraps strangely around the screen).

thanks,

Nick

not that I would really recommend it , but xorg 6.9 is in debian unstable right now, so with some work you could probably use apt to upgrade to it. it will most likely require a dist-upgrade and break a few things (I don't know what they'll be, but I'm sure something will break) but if you are just experimenting on a box that you don't really care if it breaks go for it and let us know how it goes, because at some point in the future I'd like to see knoppmyth move to xorg.

if you want unichrome pro support i wrote a howto from begginng to end, so you can play 1080i clips on the little 1ghz cpu. give it a try.. it still uses XF86, but a newer version thats not included in knoppmyth..

read it here:
