Hi, I am anticipating the newest release here any day now. {can't wait for Mythtv 0.19} I would like to know if I will encounter any issues with auto-upgrade? I ask because SATA is a manual install. Any info would be great... Linuxgeek.... |

Do another manual install. When the system reboots and X starts, enter the incorrect password. Open and xterm and: Code: rm -fr .configure
touch .upgrade Right-click on the desktop and select restart. |

sorry but what does the touch upgrade do? I am trying to learn here. I am in the same boat as linuxgeek is. Do you mean we will have to wipe everything again, reinstall manually, and then touch upgrade? If that is the case they why don’t we just do another manual when .19 comes out? Personally I have alot of config files I dont want to have to redo. Expessially LIRC configs and ledxmit settings, arf... 
I am not being sarcastic here just wondering.

the touch command in linux makes an empty file. So i guess when gdm restarts it looks to see if there is a file called upgrade in your home dir? |

I didn't state anything about restarting GDM. If you follow the above directions, it should work. Obviously, you don't need to reformat /myth... |

Follow what cecil said exactly. He never said anything about "wipe everything". (except you need to run mythbackup first) Copy any config files you want to save to /myth and they will still be there after the upgrade. |

BTW - What Cecil just gave you directions for is how to duplicate the signal that the frontend of the upgrade process (running from the CD) sends to the the backend of the upgrade process (after the first reboot). The high level outline of the upgrade process goes something like this:
2) Still on the CD, install the directory image from the CD to the root partition on the HD. 3) Leave a "flag" for the second stage of the installer indicating that it should treat this as an upgrade. 4) Running from the HD execute the second stage installer, if this is an upgrade restore from the backup files in the /myth/backup directory. Cecil's trick above just moves step 3 to after the first reboot. If you're a little more advanced and can deal with directory trees which are mounted in different locations than normal, you can actually do this while still running from the CD and save a reboot. Note that YOU NEED TO MAKE (and verify) A BACKUP BEFORE STARTING AN UPGRADE!!! |

Hi, I must have fallen off the turnip truck and gotten a bump... How does Cecil's upgrade trick help with sata? I am curious as I just went through the manual process to upgrade which only took an extra moment or two. I was very concerned as not only is my box sata, it is also dual boot and although it picks up the other os, it does mess up the lilo.conf. All went well except I do need to remember to do a backup first.... Mike |

The bump was probably when you slapped your own forehead after realizing you'd forgotten to do/check your backup.
