Post subject:  Boot times, power loss, backups, and data corruption

Greetings,

I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed (I'll search the archives in a bit).

How fast can a KnoppMyth Frontend/Backend box boot up? Can it be streemlined? I have a celeron 1.4 ghz w/ 512mb ram & 7200 rpm maxtor hd's.

How do these systems handle power loss? Or what if my wife unplugs the power when cleaning? Are you using UPS units? Can it be setup with powererchute or similar program for linux & APC UPS units?

How do you do backups of your mysql database? Or of your configs? Say after you install KnoppMyth & put in all the plugins you want, and have it set with your programming needs. What do you do for a backup at that time?

Are people doing Raid 1? Or similar?

How is data corruption handled? I'm just worried if the power goes out if I'll lose everything.

TIA

~ryan

ext3 is pretty resilient against a power failure etc.

APC ups's work fine with linux.

Software raid would be easy to setup just for the /myth partition, not sure how easy it would be to install the whole system on a software raid array tho.

Under the knoppmyth menu there is a button to backup. It just backs up the db, /etc & /home iirc. For a full backup search for "mondo" (or do an offline backup)

Search for APC or UPS on the wiki. Sadly we've drifted far enough from the current Debian release that installing using apt-get is fraught with peril. However it's easy enough to build from source for yourself.

The mythbackup script is the standard mechanism and can be run from the GUI menus. I actually use a home brewed script which is derived rather looely from it. There's also information on the wiki about backing up to DVD.

Search and ye shall find.
